Background Information:
Matsui was born to the Shinko, the Clan of Ai, family. Shinko family has a long history of vampires starting with one of the first followers of Lilith (supposedly the first vampire), Shinko. The Clan's leader, Shinko, teaches the descendents of the Ai Clan magic however, most of the clan lives amongst the humans in Japan. On her eighteenth birthday after her changing, or birthing, ceremony she apparated away during the celebration. She had her name changed legally and lives independently in London. In the midst of things she's not the best person to make friends with--still skeptical as of whether her parents/family would find her and drag her back. She's limited herself to two friends; close confidants.
When she got to England she went to Flourish and Blotts to understand more about where she was now. She first got a wand at Ollivander's (her family used smaller versions of bamboo swords however, they were immobilized in magic) , and then found out about Durmstrang. There, she decided, she would be easier to cloak herself amongst the people. Including the fact that the Shinko were very educated in the darker, yet finer, arts. She also purchased, using her inheritance money she'd thieved the night before her celebration, a squirrel monkey she named Li-Ai.
