Mastering the Monster (Humphrey and Zara) Empty Mastering the Monster (Humphrey and Zara)

Humphrey Williams had begun undergoing a change after his uncle had died. It was something that he didn't fully understand, and honestly, it was scaring him. Deep down, he knew that the answer was time and experience. He had snuck out of the castle after curfew, but honestly he didn't have much of a choice. Tonight was the full moon, and he was a werewolf.

He'd left the castle as soon as it was dark enough for him to escape unnoticed. He was wearing all black clothing, and as he entered the silent wood he took off the robe. Having a pair of shorts on under his pants, he took them off as well as his socks, shoes, and shirts. Then he looked up at the sky and the moon came out from behind a cloud.

A line of fire went down his spine, arms, legs, hands, and feet. Humphrey felt his nose change, and his ears grow back against his skull. He had grown about three feet, and become a monster. Howling at the moon his cry of loneliness and despair, he took off running through the night. Feeling as if this curse would alienate him from everybody he used to be friends with...

Zara had almost forgotten about the full moon. She managed to stay human as she crept out of Hogwarts.

She decided to go to the Hidden Forest that night. She had a feeling it may have been safer, considering last full moon there was a human bout the forbidden forest.

She could feel herself beginning to change as she walked through the forest. Before she forgot, she took out her wolfsbane potion and drank it, ignoring the foul taste. As she swallowed the potion, she heard the roar of a monster somewhere in the forest.

She began changing. Her eyes changed to violet, then her claws and tail grew. Her clothes ripped as she transformed into a wolf.

She could smell the scent of a wolf, yet it was familiar in some way. She hid behind a bush and kept a look out. Suddenly, she saw the monster that she heard before. It was Humphrey Williams. She could sense it.

Humphrey suddenly smelled a scent that made him wheel his head around. Unless he was mistaken, another werewolf was nearby, he could smell it on the air. Surprisingly, he recognized the scent as belonging to Zara Hawkins. He'd met the second year Slytherin last year over the summer. Sniffing the air, he tried to figure out which direction it was coming from. Then he felt a natural instinct take hold of him.

Almost without even thinking about it, he began howling at the full moon. For some reason it felt like the proper thing to do right now. Though, he wasn't sure why he felt like he needed to do it. It just felt...right. The werewolf let his cry echo across the hidden forest, letting everybody know there was a werewolf in the forest.

Zara stayed hidden behind the bush. Humphrey had seemed to have picked up her scent, but surprisingly he hadn't gone to attack her.

He began howling at the full moon. Zara slowly emerged from the bushes. She was hoping he wouldn't try and attack her like Ostanda did. He seemed alright, but she wasn't sure.

Zara stayed a safe distance away from him and began howling too.

He heard another werewolf howl at the moon in reply to his own howl. The sound was coming from just in front of a clump of bushes. Yes, it was Zara, the girl he had met over the summer between first and second year. Suddenly, he felt an urge to run with her. Just take off and run side by side, enjoy the light of the full moon as much as they could.

So, he looked at her, and beckoned to Zara with one of his hands that were kind of like paws. Then, dropping to all fours, he took off at a sprint. Hopefully, she would follow him. This is so much better than being out here on my own, he thought to himself. Humphrey was very glad he now knew and was friends with another werewolf. Now, he knew, at least one person would understand what he was going through...

Zara was so surprised. When Humphrey had heard her howling he didn't even look like he was going to attack her.

Zara ran after Humphrey, feeling the cool air run through her white fur. It was the best feeling ever. Finally she could be a wolf without having to worry about being attacked. She felt safe. It was like being home with her dad, being able to run freely.

It felt great to run with Zara. Humphrey knew that wolves ran in packs. Now he understood why, the wolf in him was loving having a companion to run with. Then he wondered if there were any other werewolves at Hogwarts, and whether Zara knew who they were.

Then, on a whim, he decided to increase his pace. He had always been fast, and he suddenly realized he was trying to see who was faster; Zara, or him. So, he sped up and didn't look back. Somehow, he had a feeling that Zara was going to beat him though. He couldn't say why exactly, just instinct told him he was going to get beat by a girl. A Slytherin too. That thought gave him a little extra burst of energy and speed. The Gryffindor werewolf would not lose to the Slytherin werewolf.

Zara notice Humphrey's increasing speed. She knew he was trying to outrun her. No one had outrun Zara in years. She was always the fastest. Having been a wolf since she was just a young girl, she's run a lot.

Zara sped up with Humphrey, pushed herself and caught up with Humphrey. She saw the concentration in his eyes. But, she wasn't about to let him win. Her speed increased rapidly and she was now ahead of him. But she wondered when they were going to stop.

She hadn't thought about the time. She looked up into the night sky as she was bounding through the forest. She noticed a slight orange tinge in the sky beginning to emerge from behind distant hills. The morning was slowly approaching and soon her fun and freedom would be over.

She stopped dead in her tracks, looking towards where the sun was starting to rise, trying to point it out to Humphrey.

Zara caught up to him, and then pulled ahead. Darn it, this was the first time he had ever been beaten by a girl in a race. She was fast! Definitely quicker than he was, and more agile as well. Things that were difficult for him to avoid, like fallen tress, she moved through with an almost unnatural ease.

Then, Zara stopped. It took him a couple of seconds to catch up to where she was. She was looking towards the east. He saw a slight tinge of orange, and knew that their midnight run was ending. Humphrey nodded so she would know he understood. No more werewolf fun time tonight. Maybe next month, though.

It was time for them to return to Hogwarts. Avoiding being noticed coming in on their way. This had definitely been his best full moon yet. Very useful having another, more experienced werewolf with you.

Zara felt pain take over her body instantly. She started changing out of the blue. Hoping Humphrey wouldn't follow, she ran away, struggling as she did so.

She began changing. Transformations were horrible. After tonight, she felt as though she never wanted to change into a human again. She had transformed back into a human once again.

She got up, feeling a little exhausted, and wondered about hoping to find Humphrey.
