A First Glance

[Tess McCartney]

She was breathing heavily as soon as she climbed the stairs. The room was dark, but fitting she figured, as she looked away from the common room and entered her new room. She noticed that there were three beds in the room.

No sense of real privacy she thought to herself.

But nonetheless she did feel a surge of excitement over the fact that she was on her own. She had but recently learned she was a witch, and that itself was something she needed to grasp all the more. Looking at the three rooms she realized that she had the first pick and immediately she decided to take the one near the window. It was funny there was a green tinge because of the lake, but the color was beautiful.

She sat down on the bed she chose tentatively and wondered just, what was going to happen this year.

Charlotte had made her way upstairs to go and find her new pastels that Cobalt had gotten her but on the way had heard someone else coming up here, the only other Slytherin she knew was Valentina and she had Divination now so she didn't understand who it could be.

Following the person quietly Charlotte pushed open the door to the dorm and poked her head in, looking for the new girl, whoever she might be.

"Hey there."

Charlotte smiled upon spotting her, moving into the common room Charlotte walked over to the bed next to hers and looked through the trunk at the bottom of the bed, biting her lip she took out the pastels holding them to her chest.

"I'm Charlotte Smith, I've not seen you around before...who are you?" she asked quietly

Tess looked up from her things as soon as she heard a voice. She closed her book and let out a small smile.

"Hello" she replied.

Her roommate seemed friendly enough, and so she decided to play along with this socialization.

"I'm Tess McCartney" she said softly.

[Charlotte Smith]

Charlotte smiled softly and sat down on the edge of her bed, it was odd in a house full of Snakes how the majority seemed to be nice, or at least seemed to be. Placing her pastels next to her she clasped her hands in her lap.

"Nice to meet you Tess."

Playing with her hair nervously, after all, Charlotte had never really been good at socialising with anyone, she wondered what they could talk about.

"What lessons are you taking this year? Maybe we'll share some of them."

Tess returned her smile, although tentative. She wasn't used to being around witches, despite being pure-blood, socializing with others was not a usual occurrence. She figured that being friendly would benefit her, in socializing and realizing the customs of the magical realm.

"Pleasure's all mine" she commented.

She did notice that Charlotte was nervous, was it her fault? She hoped not, for she was good at reading people and playing with hair was a normal expression of nervousness.

"I'm taking Potions, DADA, Muggle Studies, Charms, Potions and Transfigurations, you?

[Charlotte Smith]

It seemed as if both of them were a little nervous about being here and she wondered why that was, it wasn't as if she was going to get hurt or anything, so she picked up her box of pastels for support before smiling more cheerfully.

"Well thats great, I'm taking some of the same lessons as you, I'm taking DADA, Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, Infiltration and Transfiguration."

Charlotte grinned and sucked on one of her lip piercings habitually before stopping with the thought that that might be considered a little gross.

"Have you met any of the Professors yet?"

The door to the dorm room swung open as Pxyis pushed it open, but upon seeing the two girls she stopped and very quietly shut the door behind her. "Sorry," she said to them, brushing a blonde stand of hair out of her face and tucking it behind her ear, before moving over to her bed by the end of the room.
She knelt down in front of her trunk and pulled it open before digging through it in search of her Potions book. Whipping out her wand, she aimed it at the trunk and muttered, "Accio Potions Book!" and the purple book whizzed up out of a pile of clothes and into Pxyis waiting hand. She stood up, shut her trunk, shoved her wand into her pocket and fell onto the green blanket that covered her bed, opening her book to the page she needed.

Charlotte looked at the door, jumping slightly as it opened and smiled at the girl who entered, just showed her how much time she actually spent in the dorm as she didn't really know either of these girls, which was a shame.

Smiling slightly at her Charlotte watched as she began to read, wondering if it would be rude to interact with her when she was trying to study Charlotte cast a look at Tess as if for some clue about what to do in this situation.

"Hey there, I'm Charlotte Smith, I haven't seen you around either, I really do need to get my head out of these paintings!"

Tess admitted that part of her was glad that someone had classes with her, and she didn't have to be forced to socialize too fast. And once she heard Charlotte's question she shook her head.

"No, sadly not yet, but I'm pretty excited to learn" she murmured.

She decided that she was learning a lot about the girl before her. Pastels, she liked art, and part of her was a rebel from her piercing.

Intriguing she thought.

Once she heard the door creak open, she whipped her head towards the door.

Am I going to be surrounded by blondes? she humorously thought smirking.

The girl was shy, from her body language, and so Tess found herself genuinely curious about her third roommate. For one thing she was using spells that typically weren't used for first years, but she didn't really care, her mother had taught her a few spells ahead of her year just in case she ever needed to defend herself.

She felt Charlotte's gaze and lifted her brow showing her a look that expressed.

I'm new at this too she thought.

She figured she'd introduce herself to be courteous, but before she could say anything Charlotte beat her too it. Hearing her comment Tess couldn't help but chuckle at the part about the paintings.

"Tess McCartney" she simply said.

She felt that perhaps her new roommates were more studious than she was.

Tabi had always been the confident one and she always thought she could have whatever she wanted at least from her parents. She had always been the quiet one that just didn't get caught. Maybe that was why she preferred to be a loner. That way no one could ever turn on her, but as she walked into the Slytherin common room she began to run plans through her head. If I was going to be here for the next 7 years then she would have to make some friends. Maybe one of these girls like to get into trouble too. At least the fun kind that didn't casue too many problems.

Tabi walked up to the girls and just simply said " Hi, I am Tabi Prewett"

She was surprised by the amount of people entering the room. She figured that it was normal for people to do that, at least in the first year and lifted her head from her things to face the girl. She noticed that by the way that she entered she was pretty confident, and she simply let a polite smirk.

"Tess McCartney, pleasure to make your acquaintance" she murmured.

"Well Nice to meet you Tess" Tabi said as she took out her wand to put her things away. She decided that she would get a headstart on some reading so she left her potions book lay on her bed.

"So where excatly are you from?" Tabi asked seeing is she was familar with many wizarding families and the name McCartney just didn't ring to her at the moment.

Pxyis let her book drop and draped across her bed, decided she would be most comfortable with conversing these two girls upside down. A smile adorned her features as the three introduced themselves. "Im Pxyis, Pxyis Wilson," she said, before returning to her book to fold the top corner of the page and throw it onto her pillow. She rolled onto her stomach and laid there with her elbows propping her up and her head resting in her hands.
Pxyis wondered why Tess looked quite so shy, she had always been under the impression that pretty girls were loud and confident. She cast her eyes over to Charlotte, who she noted was also rather attractive, and then to Tabi who yet again was pretty. Hopefully, she could make friends with these girls, for she was rather missing her other witchy friends that had gone off to different schools, and also her few muggle friends.

As both students introduced themselves to her Charlotte smiled, there certainly were more students around lately and that would mean that there would be more chances to socialise with them, her only friend up until now was Airen, the gryffindor boy, who was lovely but...not a girl.

Feeling Pyxis' eyes on her Charlotte flushed a little and directed her smile towards each girl in turn.

"It's a pleasure to meet both of you."

When Tabi asked where she was from Charlotte smiled softly and she wondered for a minute if she should tell her where she used to come from, or where she came from now? After all her last name had changed.

"I'm from Ireland, I live there with Professor Smith, he adopted me."

Looking from Tabi to Pyxis she smiled "And what classes are you guys taking? Hopefully we'll be in some together!"

Her eyes trailed from person to person as the conversation rolled one after another. She noticed that her new roommate Pyxis was looking at her, and noticed that in her gaze she was being studied as well. She didn't mind though, after all if she was doing it, why shouldn't she do the same?

Her eyes whipped back to Tabi, once she heard her question, but Charlotte had once again beat her to it. She didn't mind, after all she was learning more about the people around her.

"McCartney is my family's American surname name, we branch off of the Black/Malfoy family" she murmured. "From what I was told, you are given a choice to change your surname once you gain citizenship in America, and my parents chose to change it"

It was funny to her how she knew not much from the Wizarding World, yet came from one of the most prestigious and older families, not to mention ones that were known to have a dark past. Muggles were something that she knew a little more of, but then again being home schooled she did have some limits towards her knowledge of them.

Pxyis returned her gaze to Tabi after looking at Tess again to hear her answer, and so she too answered. "I also branch off of the Malfoy family, though im not against muggles or muggle-borns, in fact several of my friends are muggle," Pxyis added, sending a curious glance at Tess. She wondered how the girl was related to the Malfoy's, though she could see in her attractive looks that she was clearly a Malfoy/Black, for most in those families were quite beautiful/handsome.
At Charlotte's question, Pxyis quickly responded, "History of Magic, Transfiguration, Care of Magical Creatures, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Muggle Studies, oh and of course i'll be taking the lessons im most excited for, Charms and Potions. They sound interesting and enjoyable," said Pxyis with a smile.
"Where's everyone from?" Pxyis then proceeded to ask. "Im from London," she added hastily, before awaiting everyone's response.

Charlotte didn't quite know how to handle the whole idea of being related to a famous family, she didn't think she was, her family used to be quite quiet and the only trouble that they caused was when her mother decided that it would be a good idea to do what she did.

While she learnt that Tess was actually American Charlotte's eyes widened a little, how exotic! She'd never been out of Europe before and had always wondered what it was like there in the West.

"I see! You're taking some of my classes too, I look forward to seeing you in them Pyxis, maybe we could be partners in potions or something."

Smiling happily Charlotte bit her lip, once again feeling slightly shamed that her parents didn't have such a high blood status as that of Malfoy or Black.

"Originally I come from Paris, Mama was a Chavanne, and father a Matthews I don't think any of them are well known, I...I didn't really look it up."

Biting her lip nervously Charlotte played with her lip piercing for comfort.

Pxyis suddenly wondered if her tone had been to boastful when she said she was related to the Malfoy's and by further extent, the Black's for Charlotte had looked at her funny.
"Yes, i'd love to be partners in Potions, at least i'd know someone! And France? Wow, thats really cool."
Charlotte proceeded to play with her lip piercing, and so Pxyis leant towards the girl, staring at the lip piercing curiously. "Is that a lip piercing?" Pxyis asked, before after a moment adding, "That's so cool!" and grinning at Charlotte.
Before Charlotte could say something, Pxyis gasped. "Your the girl from the forest! The one I got lost in!" She exclaimed, eyes bulging as memories of that day suddenly flooded back to her, and she let out a laugh. "The Secret Wood, right?" Pxyis asked, un-sure of the name of that wood, forest, whatever.

Tabi just sat and listened to the families these guys branched off from and wished that was her side. She of course new all about the Malfoy line but could she be from that part no she had to have family from the other side.

"It must be intersting being from the Malfoy/Black line and least you don't have to claim to be related to the Weasley's that way..unlike me" Tabi said in kind of a reluctant voice.

"As for my classes I have Potions, History of Magic, Trasfiguration, Charms. But then I suppose sometime we have to have all of them. I don't really like History of Magic seeing is that is all my father has ever talked about since I was born." Tabi laid down on her bed.

"By the way I am from Liverpool"

Charlotte smiled happily when Pyxis said she would like to be partners with her in potions, it would be nice to be around some girls for a change instead of just her Dad, Uncle and Airen as nice as they all were. Nodding her head Charlotte aggreed, Paris was wonderful.

"Why thank you, I happen to think so too."

When she was stared at a little Charlotte blushed but she smiled happily, poking her lip peircing as it was talked about, it made her feel more at ease that nobody had mentioned her unusual appearance yet.

"Yes, yes it is. Oh thank you! I make the studs myself."

At the mention that they may have met before and Charlottes obvious lack of memory she wracked her brains for a minute biting her lip as she thought: "Was it in the holidays just gone? Sorry I have a terrible memory for faces, and names, and dates too..."

Charlotte turned to Tabi and smiled, it was obvious that she was reproachful about her relations to the Weasleys, and she didn't want her to feel bad.

"Well, it doesn't so much matter about your relations background, yours is the important one."

Having never been to Liverpool Charlottes head cocked to one side and she smiled softly, she had always wanted to go, maybe Sketch the Liver Buildings but never had the chance.

"What's it like there in Liverpool, magically and none magically I mean?"

She felt that if she blinked, she'd miss most of the conversation. She did notice Pxyis gaze, and now she felt herself getting used to it, merely letting out a small smile.

I've never been this talkative before she thought to herself.

Her eyes brightened seeing that Pyxis was from the same family, at least branches off, but related. She listened towards the word Weasley's and she blinked, remembering that her father once grimaced at the name Weasley, but said to behave like the lady she was taught to be. She merely smiled and looked from girl to girl.

"I agree with Charlotte" she said politely. "I'd rather have my surname McCartney, than any other"

Once hearing the world Liverpool, she looked at her sort of excited.

"London as well Pxyis" she said smiling. "But I lived in Liverpool for a bit, but never had the chance to explore, so I don't know much"

...but I do know my Muggle music, especially The Beatles she added mentally.

She didn't really know about how the girls felt' about Muggles and she didn't want to be ostracized.

Tabi could not help but smile it looked like this group of girls might turn out to be some good friend. Especially seeing is we have to spend the next 7 years with them.

"Yes Tess I would have to agree with the name McCartney..It reminds me of Paul McCartney..you know one of the guys from the Beatles." Tabi blushed a little she always thought the youn Paul was kind a cutie.

"Anyway as for Liverpool I loved to spend most of my time down on the waterfront area. Just looking out across the Irish sea is a very breath taking view. I could sit there for hours." Tabi smiled remembering the hours she spent just sitting and reading.

"Charlotte, as for magical communities we have a small one located under the Irish sea. It seemed to be the best place at the time they put it there. It is really neat to go through the tunnel and sea the sea life all around you. But becasue my fathers shop is there I tend to stay away."

Not really knowing how the girls felt about muggles she thought it best to keep the other reason for preferring the muggle Liverpool over the magical one for now.

Her eyes glittered with excitement over the mention of The Beatles. In fact it was the only real Muggle band her parents allowed her to listen to. She looked at her shyly and smiled.

"I'll gladly share a last name similar to his. He's one of my favorites" she murmured in a softer tone.

She imagined just how Liverpool really looked like, imagining that she would have the bravery to have gone and explored, but her main knowledge came from America, more specifically New York and California.

This is cool she thought maybe someone else that she could talk to about the Beatles. it was one of her favorite groups.

"Well I just happen to love the Beatles. We cannot listen to wizard music all the time..how boring." Tabi couldn't hold in her excitement being able to talk about it. Her sister couldn't stand the Beatles and never quite understood her facination with them.

"Can't buy me Love is one of my favorites, along with Eight days a week. How about you?"

She admittedly felt somewhat uncomfortable taking up the conversation in the room, but she nodded smiling.

"Usually we listened to classical music in my home, but..but listening to that Muggle band made me love it all the more. I-I actually don't have a favorite song, but if I had to choose probably, It's Only Love, or Don't Let me Down" she admitted.

She looked at the other girls and wanted them to input more into the conversation.

"I do hope that, that no one minds us talking about M-Muggle stuff" she murmured "What are your opinions on Muggles"

She knew that was a risky conversation topic, but, she was genuinely curious.
