Cain grew up in the woods of Edinburgh and the towns just north of there, that was until his pack were given too much hassle by the locals and he ended up having to move into a protected land, those being the ones surrounding Hogwarts.

He is one of the lone Centaurs that try to distance themselves from the pack, his father is extremely strict and he was hoping that Cain would precede him to be the head of the heard but he rejected the position, giving his father an embarrassment that he never forgave Cain for.
