An Expected Surprise (Briony and Haley)

When Briony had received the second application for the apprenticeship she was not surprised in the slightest to see that it was from one of her best and brightest students, she had accepted the application straight away of course and was very happy with the apprentice's that had been selected this year, she knew that they would be able to do their best in their work, and there would be some fruitful results to come from their training.

Sitting in her office, she hummed lightly to herself, and waited for Haley to enter, she had sent her an owl saying that there would be a new meeting between them today, and that she would be expected to come to it, so that they could get the groundwork sorted for the apprenticeship and what they were going to be working on in the next few years.

Haley walked up to the Headmistress office, feeling very good, yet nervous. Good, because she got to learn so much more about the subject of Duelling, nervous because... Well the headmistress could be pretty intimidating, though Haley found her to be one of her favorite teachers. She knocked on the door when she reached it, and waited to be let in.

Briony heard a knock on her door and she smiled a little bit, flicking her wand she opened the door and she saw that there was Haley standing there, she was glad that she was on time and she waved her into the room with a small smile still staying on her lips until she reached her desk.

Hoping that this session would be as useful as the one she had had with Tess earlier in the week, Briony tapped her fingers on the desk with a sigh escaping her lips, as her mind wandered back to something else that had happened earlier this week;

"Good evening Haley, how are you? Ready for this session?" she asked.

Haley smiled slightly, and nodded. "I'm okay thank you, professor, and yes, I'm ready," she said in a confident voice, though she didn't feel all that confident.

She was so curious about what they would be doing, that she almost started dancing to get the pressure of curiosity out of her chest. She looked at Briony, wondering if she could find any answers by looking her in the eyes, but that didn't work at all. She then just felt like an idiot, standing there, not knowing what to say or do.

Briony could see that Haley wanted to get started and that was something that she quite liked about her, however, her mind flicked back to something that a Professor had told her a few days ago, and wondered if she was merely nervous because she was in her presence. Shaking the feeling off Briony leant forwards on her chair and rested her elbows on the desk.

"I am going to ask you a series of questions, the first set are going to help me decide what kind of training you would want, so, tell me, what do you hope to get from this apprenticeship?" she asked, with a raised eyebrow "What do you want to work on, physical or magical?"

Haley was a bit surprised at the questions she got from the headmistress, but didn't mind. She just didn't think physical battle-training was an option. She sat up straighter, feeling a bit more comfortable, and then gave a smile to her.

"Well, while I was in muggle school, my parents sent me to a group that trained Kali Sikaran, so I know very many techniques when it comes to physical combat. I'm very secure in that level, and I continously train, both in the common room and home when I'm there. So, I think I might stick more to the spell-casting, though I would also love to mix them," she said. She really loved doing combat physically, but a mixture of both spells and combat would be amazing to learn.

Briony nodded her head as she listened to what Haley was saying to her, it was indeed one of the biggest skills to be able to combine physical and magical fighting and Briony knew exactly how she could teach it to her, however, it would take a long time, as wandless magic would need to be learnt, and that was a hard disipline to master, to control magic without it's conductor.

"I believe that we could incorporate them together when we later train, so, for now you wish to focus on the spell aspect of things? This is good, it means that I have one student developing physical fighing and the other with spells." Briony spoke, writing this down on a scrap of parchment.

Standing up, Briony paced around for a little bit and then asked;

"Have you had any formal weapon training? In relation to your spell battles, you have not yet had a proper duel, have you? Unless it's one that you've done out of lesson." she mused thinking that a proper duel would be where they should begin their spell training.

Haley listened closely to what headmistress Romain was saying, knowing it was pretty important. She gave a nod when she asked the question. "Yes, spell-casting would be my first priority," she said calmly.

She then tilted her head to the side. The other student? Which one was that? Of course, she didn't ask. She wasn't sure if that would be intrusion on privacy or not. Haley looked up at Romain when she asked if she'd ever been in a proper duel. Well, proper and proper... However, she had been in a fight with one other, and it had been a fight for her life. But should she say so to Romain? Haley decided to not tell her, not yet. She had to figure out some stuff herself before she decided to tell anyone about that woman.

"Kali Sikaran is a lot about defending oneself from weapons without having one themselves, as well as when you have weapons and how to handle them. But I haven't dealt with that that much," she said, "And I've been in a duel before," she said slowly, hoping she wouldn't ask too many questions about that.

Briony nodded her head and she made a small humming noise in the back of her throat, she believed that it was going to be quite interesting to teach Haley some of the techniques that she herself used that she thought would be of use to her.

They certainly were able to cause some damage if done in the right way. Deciding that she might as well move onto some of the training that she would be doing with Haley, Briony listened to her answers, more than a little surprised she had been in a duel before.

"I see, well then, I suppose we shall move onto something that I am wanting to teach you, it involves a spell that we have already learnt in class, could you guess what that spell is perhaps."

Not asking about the duel that Haley had been in, Briony smirked and had a twinkle in her eyes, perhaps Haley was more like herself than she had thought at first.

"It's a spell that my husband would like given his position."
