Sleep deprivation (Humphrey and Odette)

[Odette Cambry]

Odette sat at one of the arm chairs in the common room, sipping her passion tea with a sigh. The fire was very warm and the heat tickled her legs. She was already in her pajamas and she felt more calm than she had in ages. Reading a book her mother sent her, she couldn't be happier.

Odette closed her book and just relaxed by the fire. It was comforting, as everyone was already in bed and it was just herself up. But, there was always stragglers, and Odette turned around to see someone walking into the common room.

Humphrey was in his polar bear pajama bottoms, with a plain white t-shirt on his upper half, and he was wearing his slippers. He'd been having a hard time sleeping because it was getting closer to the end of the year. Two things were worrying him, and he just couldn't seem to shut off his brain. The first was about safety, because if the pattern of the last three years was followed, there would be an attack at the end of this school year. Secondly, was a bit more normal, he was going to miss all of his friends terribly while he was away.

He was currently reading a science fiction book called Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card, and he brought that with him as he walked down the stairs to the Gryffindor Common Room. Surprisingly, somebody else was there, and he saw that it was his friend Odette. It seemed a bit rude to intrude on her, and he was about to head back up the steps but she saw him. Well, maybe they could talk about what was bugging them, then maybe both of them would be able to fall asleep. "Hello Odette, what's keeping you up this late?" Humphrey sat down on the chair across from her, she was in the most comfortable armchair of course.

Odette noticed it was Humphrey, and she relaxed quite a bit. She didn't exactly know everyone, though she was in her third year at Hogwarts. It was close to the end of the year, and nothing really felt right. She had a sinking feeling in her stomach about the end of the year. "Hi Humphrey." Odette smiled at him. "I like your pajamas. I love polar bears." Thinking about his question, she shrugged. "I guess I have a lot on my mind. Why are you up so late?"

For some reason Odette was a little bit of a loner, he wasn't sure if it was by choice or not. Either way, she seemed like a pretty cool person, and it was fun hanging out with her. Maybe she would come out of her shell a bit next year. "Polar Bears are pretty cool." He knew it was a pathetic pun, but he couldn't resist the temptation to say it. "Same, I'm worried about the safety of everybody, as well as just sad the year's coming to an end. Safety because if the past is anything to judge by there might be an attack somewhere at the end of the year. End of year because I'm going to miss my friends, waking up staring at the Gryffindor red and gold..." Humphrey could have gone on forever about all thet hings he would miss about Hogwarts.

"What's on your mind?" It was always best to talk about something if it is keeping you up at night. He'd learned that after his uncle's death, talking it through with his aunt was hard, but had helped in the long run.

"Yeah, they're interesting. Sometimes I think that I was one in my past life." Odette, catching the weak pun, joked with a wink. "I know. It has seemed there has been a planned attack every year so far. Sometimes I think that it won't happen this year, but that's only me being optimistic." She shrugged, a piece of her red hair falling into her face. "I love being a Gryffindor. I think that's why I dyed my hair red. It seemed fitting." Odette also liked the color on her.

"Nothing too exciting. Honestly, it's not worth picking apart my brain. You'll get nothing out of it." Odette chose her words carefully. It wasn't that she didn't trust Humphrey, it's just she didn't know how to fully tell people what she thought without offending them in some way.

"In a past life, huh, I think I would probably end up as a penguin in a past life. If I had to geuss." Humphrey admitted, and winked back at Odette. She was pretty funny, which was good, because he attempted to make jokes at times. "Yea, the first three years I kept telling myself it wouldn't happen, but it did. I'm a lot more prepared this year than last year though." It was a tough thing to accept, now he had though, Humphrey felt a lot better about it. "So that's why, I thought it was just your style. I think it suits you."

"Hey, no matter what it is, it always helps to talk about it with somebody. Doesn't have to be me, but don't hold it all in Odette. It isn't healthy. If it's personal though, I understand why you wouldn't want to trust me with it." he said quietly. He'd thought, well that they were friends, but maybe she didn't trust him. Oh well, it really wasn't his business. "You know what's weird, I'm going to be a fifth year next year. Kind of crazy, huh? Don't feel like I should be that old yet."
