Lesson Two - First Years Empty Lesson Two - First Years

Post by Doctor Florence Nettle Fri Dec 30, 2011 2:21 am

The Doctor stood inside the runic circle of the standing stones with a calm expression on his face as he waited for the last student to arrive. The rest of his class was present, all fifteen of them, but one girl, Alys, was late. And just when they were getting to something practical.

Alys made her way to the runic circle where the Highmaster stood, a little hesitant because non of her friends were taking this class. All the students present were strangers to her but she took a deep breath and made her way to them anyway.

Shuffling into place behind a pair of twins from Verstand and a short girl from Geschik, she waited for the lesson to begin.

Seeing the last student arrive, and not really feeling up to punishing the girl, The Doctor clapped his hands together before touching a series of black lines on the nearest standing stone.

A gout of flame erupted from the markings for only a second before disappearing.

Smiling wide, The Doctor turned to his class,

"Who can tell me what the key rune of that sequence was? It's pretty obvious..."

Alys stared at the brief display, puzzled. The Doctor had simply made the fire appear, and now wanted to know how it was done. Alys herself had no idea so she just waited, hoping someone else would answer. She could hear the short girl ahead gasping softly and some boys whispering "cool" at the back but no one offered an answer to the Highmaster's question.

The Doctor looked out over his class with mild disappointment,

"Really?" he asked, quite bewildered, "I make a burst of fire shoot out from some ink lines and you can't even guess what the main rune of it represents?"

Shrugging, he took a piece of charcol and drew a circle before drawing a square through the lines of the circle,

"The rune of Fire." he told them simply, "This is it's nordic rune of course, each language has it's only rune for Fire."

He drew another circle but this time drew two wavey lines through it, making sure they looked like waves,

"Someone give me a guess as to what element this rune represents."

Alys looked at the next symbol carefully, trying to recall if she had came across it in her reading. The Highmaster didn't look at all pleased with the class so she thought this time, she would give it a try. So what if she was wrong, at least she would be brave enough to try.

Shifting from behind the twins, the girl slowly raised her hand. "Water?" she offered, hesitantly.
