A Talk Overdue (Cobie and Charlotte)

Cobie had decided that it was finally time to talk to Charlotte. It wasn't even all about what had happened between them either. Mostly it was because she'd been asking Cobalt when she could see him now that he had his own body. Even if that body was entirely faked by Cobalt's magical object.

Sighing a little bit, he sat down on a nearby tree-stump. This was going to be difficult for him, he could tell. Even now his stomach was clenching. He was so very nervous. He didn't want to give into his anger and shout at her or, heaven forbid, attack her. But he knew that the pain was still there. How was it not going to be? Was he supposed to just forget it all and go back to being happy and bright and friendly? That kind of thing was Cobalt's job. He wasn't going to fake a smile for someone.

But Charlotte always knew how to get a real one from him.

Charlotte was very nervous, she had been asking Cobalt about Cobie for a long time now, now she knew that he had his own body, but now that she was going to see him it was a completely different story, she was going to be face to face with the man that she hurt with the actions she took out of her own selfishness.

But now it was time to face the things she had done and atone for them, she wanted to apologise but she didn;t know if it would be good enough for Cobie, she had hurt him a lot she knew, but there was something else that she was worried about, maybe he was going to still be very angry with her...?

Approaching the copse in the silent wood they had arranged to meet, Charlotte spotted him, and gave Cobie a shy wave;

"Uh...hey there Cobie." she smiled softly.

Cobie had been aware of Charlotte approaching because his nose had picked up her scent. It was different to the rest of the forest. It smelt fresh but also very clean. Apparently she had chosen a lavender bath bomb for her morning soak.

When she entered the little clearing he smiled faintly. He did promise himself no more fake smiles after all. This was all he could manage right now, nervous as he was,

"Hello there Charlotte." he greeted her back before pausing, "Long time no see."

Charlotte could feel the tension in the atmosphere in the forest and she couldn't believe that she had actually thought that this was going to be a good idea! How stupid was she!? But it was obvious that Cobie wasn't that mad with her, otherwise he would have shouted at her right away surely?

This gave her a little bit of confidence and she smiled a little wider at Cobie, why couldn't he have had a body before this time? Maybe they wouldn't have been in this predicament in the first place. But she supposed now was the time to say what she had came here to say;

"I'm sorry." she whispered softly "I really didn't mean for it to happen the way it did and...I just wanted to say, that I was sorry for what I did to you, even if it won't help."

Cobie couldn't help the small chuckle as he shook his head. The tension was so thick that you could cut it with a knife. Perhaps that was what they needed right now? This conversation could be the knife that cuts through their doubts and tension.

Her smile widening made his own smile widen slightly. She just had one of those infectious smiles. He chuckled again and shook his head. Right now he couldn't look at her. She wasn't even very sorry. He could see it in her body language,

"But you meant for it to happen anyway right?" he asked with a faint smile and a raised eyebrow, "Just not this way."

Charlotte had decided that she needed to be brutally honest with Cobie, he would tell if she was being otherwise and they wouldn;t get anywhere in the conversation, hopefully he would understand where she was coming from and would be able to take on what she said without getting too angry.

"Yes I did mean for it to happen Cobie, I thought that it wasn't the type of situation that I wanted to be in from the beginning." she stated, as it was true she didn't like the idea when the Older for of herself had begun to get close to Cobie it was just odd.

"It just took a little longer for Older Charlotte to see it that way too, and when we both did, we decided that we wanted to start a new, from both of our old ties." she continued to explain.

Cobie nodded to himself as he noticed her posture change from somewhat guarded to a stand he knew to mean honesty was going to be coming very soon. Of course he wasn't sure if he really wanted to hear Charlotte's honesty. She'd always hated him for some reason, it was bound to be brutal in it's delivery. He nodded,

"Of course you did, you hate the idea of it from the beginning. Hated me from the beginning." he agreed firmly, looking up at the sky, "Hated that I was my own person but still somehow a part of Cobalt."

When she mentioned the older self seeing it that way eventually too anger flushed through his body, white hot and urgent,

"You mean she saw it after you made it damned near impossible for me to be with her?" he asked her cuttingly, "And then there's the real problem I find... you didn't think to include me in any of these discussions. I could have understood it if you'd talked to me, both of you. I would have accepted it. I'd have been sad but not angry at all, if it truly was what you both wanted. But no... you did the unforgivable. Proud of that?"

Charlotte raised her eyebrows a little bit when Cobie said that she had hated him from the beginning and she felt herself getting as angry as he might have been becoming, of course the way she had first met the younger Cobalt was a way in which she never ever wanted to meet anyone again. It might have played a part in her emotions towards him.

"I didn't hate you Cobie, I still don't now. I just don't really like you very much, it's to do with the circumstances I first knew of your existence." she stated, with a small shrug.

Blinking again Charlotte knew all of that was true but hearing it like that just seemed to cut deeper than anything else, it made her less happy with her choice and she bit her lip a little wondering how to respond to what was being said to her.

"No, I'm not really proud of it no." she stated "What else was I supposed to do...when I was afraid of you?" Charlotte asked in a quiet voice "You're everything my Papa was before I came to him and he was a scary, violent and deadly man! What was I supposed to do, come to you and tell you that we didn't want this any more? No way!"

Cobie nodded a little bit. It was all the truth. Or at least the truth as she saw it. She had never hated him, she had only ever really disliked him. Somehow that did little to reassure him at all. He smiled thinly, not a hint of warmth or mirth in it,

"Of course." he muttered to himself, "First impressions and all that."

As he listened to her speaking Cobie found himself getting angrier and angrier. He honestly couldn't believe what he was hearing. She was still trying to justify this! Still trying to make out like he was the bad guy in this whole situation. Just because that fit the picture of him she'd built up,

"You were supposed to talk to me. Like a reasonable, responsible, human being." he told her simply before he blinked once and was sudden so very sad, "So you wrote me off as some mindless killer did you? Someone to be afraid of? Of course, you did. You never took the chance to get to know me. And even if I was this rabid dog you seem to think I am you know that Cobalt wouldn't let me hurt you. You know..."

He chuckled weakly,

"There's a reason why the Cobalt from before you met him was so jaded. Why I'm so jaded." he told her with a shrug, "I thought there was no type of betrayal I hadn't been hit with. I thought I was dulled to it. Thank you for showing me differently Charlotte."
