Lesson Three-Mandrakes Empty Lesson Three-Mandrakes

Post by Aslyander Baudelaire Tue Jan 10, 2012 2:46 pm

Alysander whistled as he enterd the green houses. Running a hand through his hair he smiled as he smelt the fresh air of herbs. Remembering the lesson for the day he was worried. What if perhaps one of the students forgot their earmuffs? No he had to ensure that they'd be ready and maybe cast a sticking spell to make sure they knew what was best.

"Good morning please put your earmuffs on and your protective gear so we may begin." He stated smiling at the students that filtered in.

Leshia walked into the greenhouses wondering what lesson was on tap for today. As she looked at the tables she noticed that there were mandrake plants. She knew about these types of plants and didn't feel like being knocked out for a few hours so she made sure to walk over to her seat and place and seal her earmuffs in place as she waited for the next instruction.

Haley had placed her earmuffs around her neck. It was her first class of Herbology, and she was really looking forward to learning about Mandrakes. A classmate from Hufflepuff had told her that she needed the earmuffs. She sat down next to a girl she could only remember the last name of. Prewett. Just like the men from the tales of the Deathly Hallows. She smiled.

"Hey," she said, "I'm Haley Smith."

And then she put her earmuffs on.

Darren did as he was told. Earmuffs on. Roger. Protective gear. Roger. He slipped them on and placed a piece of parchment and quill in case someone wanted to tell him something.

Leshia was still waiting for class to start, when a girl who appeared to be a Hufflepuff came up be
side her.

"Hey," she said, "I'm Haley Smith."

Hufflepuff she thought, had she met anyone from that house yet, she couldn't remember if she had or not.

"Hi I am Leshia Prewett, nice to meet you. Smith thats a interesting last name..Nice and simple are you related to any important people of our history.?"

Just then Leshia noticed that Darren walked into class so she thought she would send him a wave.

"Hi Darren" Leshia smiled

Haley nodded to Leshia with a grin.

"Yeah, Smith is a very ordinary name." she said. Then her smile faltered. She was very proud of her bloodline, but she was careful not to brag either. So, she simply looked pleased when she said: "And I'm a descendant of Helga Hufflepuff."

Haley thought of the face of her uncle, Zacharias, who had told her he had been a douche at Hogwarts when he himself went there. Haley couldn't even imagine him being a douche. He was her favorite uncle. Her smile widened a bit more when she thought of the chalice lying safely in her dormitory. Then she looked curiously at Leshia.

"Are you related to anyone yourself? Or am I mixing Peverell and Prewett together? I keep doing that, but I have no idea of why..." Haley admitted with an innocent look.

Leshia was the one sister who really didn't care about who she was related too unlike her sister so she no problem admitting her she was related too.

"Prewett is in no relation to the Peverell's, if you want to get technical I am sort of related to the Weasleys. My father is realated to Molly Weasley, her name used to be Prewett.

"Molly Weasley? Okay, now that's cool!" Haley said joyously. She had heard a lot about Molly Weasley, as she was Harry Potter's mother-in-law, and not to mention a very active member of The Order of the Phoenix. Haley really admired that woman, along with her daughter. She had also met George Weasley in his shop.
"Have you met her? I mean, you probably have. Is she as awesome as people say?" Haley asked with a massive grin.

Lesson Three-Mandrakes Empty Re: Lesson Three-Mandrakes

Post by Parker Emery Fri Jan 13, 2012 12:35 pm

Parker had thought he had far too many classes cramped indoors and while he did have a lot of classes already, he was willing to fit in Herbology. He was very curious as to what kind of plants existed in the Wizarding world and definitely wanted time to stretch his legs from sitting behind desks all day.

Happy to see he's made it seemingly on time, he walked into the green house and looked around at the large pots with plants in them. He definitely wondered what they would be needing earmuffs for.

He walked over and took a spot somewhat near the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw girls that were talking. He looked curiously at the plant sitting in the pot wondering what it was and looked around, noticing others already had their earmuffs on. He grabbed his and put them on.

Leshia was enjoying the conversation and then Haley had to go and ask about the Weasleys, which was always a taboo subject around the house.

"Molly weasley? Have you met her? I mean, you probably have. Is she as awesome as people say?"

Leshia tried to think of a way to say it without sounding to offended by her question.

"To be honest I have never met the woman, if you listen to what my father says, she was beaneath us. But then those are his beliefs not mine." Leshia said simply

That was when another student walked into the classroom and he appeared to be a Slytherin, Leshia debated on whether or not to say hi.

Against her better judgement she went ahead. "Hi, I am Leshia, you have to have the earmuffs becasue these creatures are loud. Loud enough to make you pass out."

Parker looked up when he realized the Ravenclaw girl, Leshia, was talking to him. He moved the earmuff off one of his ears a bit to hear her better. He nodded and decided it wouldn't hurt to make acquaintances in the class. "Hi. Parker Emery."

He looked back down to the pot in front of him curiously, at what she said about the plants- or no, she said creatures. he really had no clue what they'd be dealing with and looking up at the board he had no clue what a mandrake was. "How can plants be loud?"

"Hi. Parker Emery."

"Nice to meet you Parker, by the way my last name is Prewett my sister is in your house..Just watch out for her.

Leshia could help but giggle when Parker asked "How can plants be loud?"

"Wait until we pull them out to re-plant them and you will discover that they scream. I remember the first time I seen them in my book I thought of a really ugly looking baby, really mad." Leshia smiled

Leshia wondered where this guy was from, she thought everyone in Slytherin house knew everything, she figured he would have known about Mandrakes since he was in his nappies.

When she was telling him about her sister, he looked back at her. "Tabi Prewett? She's in some of my classes. I'll watch out, thanks." He gave a small, polite smile before looking down and making a face at the plant.

"An ugly baby? Really? It's sounds like whatever this thing is should be more in care of magical creatures then herbology...though it still looks more like a plant from what I see."

He secured his earmuffs back tightly over his ear. "The whole screaming thing sound really unpleasant too." Parker reached out at the plant, taking a leaf in his hand, looking more closely at it.

Leshia started to laugh as she looked at the face that Parker was making at the plant.

"An ugly baby? Really? It's sounds like whatever this thing is should be more in care of magical creatures then herbology...though it still looks more like a plant from what I see."

Leshia was trying not to fall over from her laughing. "Just wait until you pull it out of the plant holder, you will see what I mean."

"The whole screaming thing sound really unpleasant too." Parker said

"You have no idea, the first time I saw them I forgot to secure my earmuffs and I was knocked out for a few hours." Leshia couldn't forget that moment her dad was ready to beat her for being so careless.

When she had started laughing he looked up at her and smiled a bit, though he didn't think he'd said anything very funny. He hoped she was just easily amused and not laughing at his ignorance over the plant-creature.

"You have no idea, the first time I saw them I forgot to secure my earmuffs and I was knocked out for a few hours." He looked back at the plant. He really did not want to be knocked unconscious by an ugly baby-plant. "So I take you've a lot of experience with things like this?"

Lesson Three-Mandrakes Empty Re: Lesson Three-Mandrakes

Post by Haley Vilde Smith Sun Jan 15, 2012 10:44 am

Haley knew she had hit a sore spot. The way Leisha had said 'the woman' about Molly Weasley told her that she wasn't a subject of discussion in their household. She groaned to herself, and then turned to Leisha.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to pry," she said with a sigh. She really hated when she did that. One of the downsides to being extremely curious, she supposed.

But Leisha was a Ravenclaw. Why would she sound so halfheartedly when talking about someone who had been so close to the one who had saved the world? Haley looked down at the tip of the Mandrake. Maybe that was just the way her upbringing had been? But Leisha seemed like a nice person to Haley, so she decided not to put too much into it.

Haley looked up and noticed surprised that a Slytherin, Parker Emery from Flying lessons, had put his stuff down not so far off and that Leisha and him were in a conversation. Haley shook her head; she really needed to learn not to think too hard so she got lost in her own thoughts.

"The whole screaming thing sound really unpleasant too." Parker just said. Haley nodded a bit in agreement. She knew the Mandrakes would be very unpleasant; she had read about them herself. But she really didn't look forward to it. What if she did pass out?

"You have no idea, the first time I saw them I forgot to secure my earmuffs and I was knocked out for a few hours." Leisha's reply didn't really soothe Haley either, but she shrugged it off.

Then Haley noticed Leisha's expression; she looked so serene.

Haley frowned. "Is something the matter?" she asked Leisha, after giving a small wave to Parker.

Then Parker asked another question, giving Leisha the perfect excuse to avoid Haley's question if she wanted to.

"So I take you've a lot of experience with things like this?"

Lesson Three-Mandrakes Empty Re: Lesson Three-Mandrakes

Post by Guest Sun Jan 15, 2012 11:41 am

Leshia really wasn't that upset when haley asked her about Molly, it was just not something that was talked about in her house.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to pry," Haley said

"Really Haley its ok, the Weasley's are just a subject that a house full of Slytherin's never talk about." Leshia leaned over and bumped Haley in the arm as to say no worries.

"Is something the matter?" Haley asked

"I just wish I knew more about the Prewett side of the family, but sometimes it seems that my father just disowned them because of Molly. I just never ask questions. I just try to listen. Sometime I wonder what my family is going to say when they find out I am not in Slytherin." Leshia looked towards the ground.

She thought she was feeling better about this after her talk with Charlotte but apparently the feelings are still there.

Trying to change the thought for a moment she heard parker ask, "So I take you've a lot of experience with things like this?"

"Yep, I have had more experiences with things than I care to mention, with my father being a potion master I learn many things, and have lots of problems." Once again Leshia felt a wave of depression hit her. It just seems she was never up to her fathers standards.

Post by Parker Emery Sun Jan 15, 2012 12:25 pm

Parker half-listened quietly as the girls talked. He inspected the plant with a curious expression as he wondered who or what Weasleys were and why a family would disown their kid if they were in a certain house. Sure he did hear the occasional nasty things said about each of the houses, but he didn't understand why anyone would be so upset about it. You were there for a reason and wouldn't do as well anywhere else, it's where you has a person would do your absolute best and why would a parent want anything less.

He looked back up as she spoke, "Yep, I have had more experiences with things than I care to mention, with my father being a potion master I learn many things, and have lots of problems." He saw that she looked upset after having said this and thought that he'd said something to remind her of something bad and took it as his queue not to continue talking about it, risking upsetting her more.

He looked down to the dirt of the pot and mumbled, more to himself then her, not sure if she could hear him, "Maybe you could help me in some of our lessons then, 'cause I feel like I'm stumblin' around in the dark."

Even though part of the subject was touchy to Leshia she still felt fine talking about it. It was always a good thing.

"Maybe you could help me in some of our lessons then, 'cause I feel like I'm stumblin' around in the dark." Parker mumbled

Leshia was not sure if Parker knew she had heard him our not. "Sure Parker, I can help you. I do have one question if you do not mind?"

Leshia was wondering how a Slytherin could be so in the dark about things.

"How is it you are in Slytherin and seem to know nothing about things? I thought all Slytherins knew everything. Not that it is a bad thoing or anything, don't get me wrong." Leshia smiled at Parker hoping he would understand.

Haley smiled to Leisha as she said that it was okay that she had asked the question. She felt a bit more at ease, and started studying the plant after giving Leisha a smile, saying she understood. Then she simply listened in on the conversation that Leisha had with Parker, though she soon found that maybe that was eavesdropping when Parker asked a personal question about Leisha helping him in class. When Haley heard that, she turned a deaf ear to them, and studied the mandrake even more.

"Slytherins are normal people too, you know. I really wish I knew more, and I'm set on doing and learning as much as I can. It's just..." he hesitated a moment, looking up at her again. "I've never been exposed to this stuff, I'm muggleborn."

He glanced between both girls, seeing what they'd say. Some of the others in his house didn't seem to like it, so he didn't know how others would react. They made it seem so awful, but he tried to not let it get to him, their judgement didn't even make sense to him.

Lesson Three-Mandrakes Empty Re: Lesson Three-Mandrakes

Post by Haley Vilde Smith Tue Jan 17, 2012 5:28 am

Okay, no matter how hard Haley studied the Mandrake, she had not seen that one coming. Parker Emery was a muggle-born? She didn't mind at all, but she was surprised. Then she grinned as she saw him looking between her and Leisha to see what reaction they would have.

"You know, that is pretty cool. There are extremely few muggle-borns that get into Slytherin house. But don't worry about that. I mean, I'm fullblood, but I couldn't care less about bloodstatus. I mean, you are who you are judged by your personality, right? Not your bloodline. And I have plenty muggle friends at home, and I also have a muggle-born friend who goes to Beauxbatons in France. She's awesome. But don't worry, seriously. If people can't stand you because you're a muggle-born, then they're not worth your time. I mean, to me, you seem pretty cool. And especially since you joined the flying lessons. That is just awesome if you're muggle-born! That shows guts, and I like it," Haley said, hoping it would comfort him, if not a little.

She sighed. She really didn't like the whole blood-thing. She had fullblooded friends that looked down upon muggle-borns as well, so she didn't really put too much into it. But she really wanted people to see beyond the relation of a muggle-born.

Lesson Three-Mandrakes Empty Re: Lesson Three-Mandrakes

Post by Parker Emery Tue Jan 17, 2012 6:19 am

Parker let out a small sigh of relief and smiled a bit as Haley was talking. It was much like his idea about the whole thing. If you're a wizard, you're a wizard. You go to school to learn about magic, so it's not like some people are simply better at it because they're pureblood or worse if their not, otherwise there would be no point to a school. It takes learning and practice and maybe if exposed to magic you could be better to start out with. But that doesn't mean you've got more magic in you.

He also figured it wasn't worth wasting his time, sure some of the names bothered him at times, but he'd learn what he had to and show them he was just as good as them, better even. Though the whole flying lessons didn't seem so gutsy to him, he just thought every witch of wizard just must learn to ride, and since he didn't know how, he must learn.

He looked down and his face got a bit red from her flattery, something he just wasn't used to. It sort of embarrassed him really. "Thanks, that means a lot." He hadn't really known what to say, but he did mean that. She certainly was very nice, and he liked that.

"Thanks, that means a lot."

When Parker said that, Haley couldn't do anything but send him a fullblown smile, slightly proud that she had made him feel better; she loved calming people and being on their side in times of stress. She didn't comment on him going a bit red, because she so understood; it was very difficult to know how to reply to flattery. Haley herself usually either took it with a small thanks, or she made herself look sarcastic, the latter an instinct, not something she liked doing...

"No problem," Haley said with the same, wide smile, feeling that she might have made one more 'possible-friend-to-be'.

This she was very happy about; the Hufflepuff girls' dormitory was pretty empty except for her. So she really wouldn't mind some friends when she was around the school. She had felt a bit lonely the last few days. Now, she was chatting with Parker and Leisha like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Haley's smile got, if possible, even bigger.

Post by Guest Tue Jan 17, 2012 12:31 pm

When Parker had said he was a muggle-born she figured her father would just have a fit. Muggle-borns were just not placed in Slytherin house, it just wasn't done.

"Well Parker I think it is neat that your are probably the only muggleborn in Slytherin house, there must be something about you that allowed the hat to place you there. Anyway don't tell anyone in my family but I could care less about blood status." Leshia smiled at Parker hoping it calmed in fears he might have had about her thoughts.

"Anyway I would still be glad to help you, and I am sure Haley here will be glad to help you too."
