First Years-First Lesson Empty First Years-First Lesson

Post by Sofia Slytherin Wed Feb 15, 2012 7:32 am

Sofia was ready to start a new year with a new group of students. She had hoped that the first years this years were as receptive as the ones last year.

She was glad she didn't have a lot of work to do to set up the classroom, all she had to do was wait for the class to start. She took her wand and placed the following information on the board:

Assignment:

Welcome to the towers 1st years and in a summary tell me what your favorite Zodiac is and why.

Now all she had to do was wait for the first students to arrive. She had heard that there was a new student this year that was blind, she hoped that she would go ahead and take her class. Sofia had invented a spell a long time ago for a friends that was blind so she could enjoy the finer things with Astronomy. There was always seeing in the books, but seeing in the mind was the best.

She had not seen her on the class roster as of yet, but she was on the Divination one, maybe she could talk her into the class.

First Years-First Lesson Empty Re: First Years-First Lesson

Post by Xander Clarke Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:08 pm

Xander walked into the spacious tower, surprised that he was the first one there. As he took a seat in the middle he saw what was on the board. He had a question, and since no one else was there, he didn't bother to raise his hand.

"Professor. Did you want that on a parchment or will that be in discussion?" He didn't want to seem like a little know-it-all, but he figured he'd get a head start on the writing if that was needed.

First Years-First Lesson Empty Re: First Years-First Lesson

Post by Jaycie Simple Fri Feb 17, 2012 4:15 pm

Jaycie walked into the class, bag slung casually over her shoulder. Star-gazing at home had always been a family thing on Saturday nights, and so Astronomy was something she was excited for. She knew a lot of northern constellations, because of her dad, and her favourite had always been the Pisces of the Zodiac. Seeing that they were meant to think of their favourite Zodiac constellation, she had this down-pat.

Jay didn't notice Xander and walked straight past him, caught up in her own thoughts. She sat at the front desk and laid out her things, preparing for the lesson.

Tessa manged to make it open to the tower. She was proud of herself that she wasn't falling so much. Even though there was time that she did. But that couldn't be helped. She then decided to take a seat in the back.

She then reached in her bag and pulled out the book that Professor Slytherin gave her.

Sofia noticed that the classes has started to arrive and that Ms. Grey had seemed to make it in once piece.

"That is an excellent question Mr. Clarke, How about each of you tell me what your favorite Zodiac is?"

Sofia had to always start he first year classes out like this because it gave her a feel of the student and their type of personality.

"Seeing this is such a small class feel free to just speak out."

Tessa sat there and thought about it for a couple of seconds. " My favorite zodiac is Leo, because that is what I am. And if you are talking about the chinese, the dragon."

She then went back to being quiet.

Tessa was trying to remember the meaning of what the dragon was.

" I think it was because I was born in the year of the dragon." She then named someon the traits of a dragon. "Magnanimous, stately, vigorous, strong, self-assured, proud, noble, direct, dignified, eccentric, intellectual, fiery, passionate, decisive, pioneering, artistic, generous, and loyal. Can be tactless, arrogant, imperious, tyrannical, demanding, intolerant, dogmatic, violent, impetuous, and brash."

Sofia listened to Tessa give a great explaination.

"Very good Ms.Grey, 10 points to Gryindor."

Since Ms. Grey mentioned the Chinese Zodiac Sofia thought she might change what they were learning.

"Who else can tell me another Chinese Zodiac?"

Tessa smiled, she wasn't sure if she even remember all of them. "there's the rat, the ox, the boar (or pig), the dragon, the rooster, the tiger, the dog, the horse, and the snake." She knew that she was missing a couple but couldn't remember them.

Sofia was impressed that Tessa knew all of them, but she really wanted to hear from the rest of the class.

"That is very good Ms. Grey, but lets hear from someone else. Does anyone know which ones Ms. Grey missed?"

"She missed the cat, the goat, the rabbit and the monkey, professor." Jaycie said softly from her place. "But the cat isn't really a zodiac. The rat tricked him into missing the banquet." Jaycie only knew these things because it interested her.

Xander felt a little lost now. He knew about the chinese zodiac, but not much. He knew he was a Capricorn in the usual zodiac though.

Trying not to draw attention to his lack of knowledge, he waited to see if the conversation would steer back to from the chinese zodiac so he could have something to say.

"Good job, Ms. Simple, 10 points to Hufflepuff" Looking around the classroom she was wondering who had not said their own opinion.

She saw Mr. Clarke sitting there and just looking a little lost.

"Well Mr. Clarke what do you have to say, what can you tell us about the Zodiacs, either one would be fine?"

Tessa rasied her hand. " Professor, there are more zodiacs beside the chinese and the one we get our horoscopes from. There is the Irish and the Egyptian."

( OCC: I know this because I did my senior term paper on zodiacs)

Xander sighed and shot Tessa a glaring look. He had nothing against knowledge. But flaunting that knowledge that way was just rude.

He cleared his throat and attempted to answer. "Well I don't know much really. I know I'm a Capricorn, and I've read the traits that usually go with them. I'll admit some of them make sense with me, but not all of them. I don't know how a constellation can include all the people's personalities born in all of those days in every year from the beginning of time. It seems quite unrealistic to me."

He didn't mean to criticize the professor's subject of expertise. He just wanted to understand.

"Mr. Clarke I would not necessarily say it is the constellation that describe the peoples personalities. It is more the human that interrupts the ideas. They look at the traits of the person behind the constellation to give you an idea of somethings you might have. It does not mean you will have them all. 10 points to Slytherin"

Sofia smiled because she could completely understand what he was saying, because that one one of the main things she looked at when she started learning about the stars.

"Also MS. Grey you are correct there are many different zodiacs out there, beside what you mentioned there are also those for the Aztecs too." Sofia smile at Tessa.

"This gives me an idea for tonight's assignment. I want you to take a look at the traits for your zodiac and tell me which ones you think are your and why, and then tell me why the others are night. Just drop the assignment into my box before the next lesson.

Looking around the room she smile, it had been a very interesting lesson and the children had lots of thoughts and she liked that.

Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Jaycie tried to remember what her star sign was. She wasn't completely sure and would have to research it. She stood up and packed her stuff into her bag before turning to leave. She had just past Tessa's desk when she wondered something, important it seemed. "Hey, um, Tessa... do you want me to walk with you out of the classroom? Just so you don't trip or anything?" she didn't want to seem rude or anything, but Jay couldn't think of a worse way to be haunted by who you were.

Tessa smiled as she could tell that Jaycie was only trying to look out for her.

" Sure I would like that."

She then started to think about what zodiac she would use for her homework. Tessa thought maybe she could have one of her sisters help her write it.

After everyone had left the classroom Sofia sat down to tally up all the points she had for this class.

She gave 5 points automatically to everyone that came to class, that was always a given and then each of the 3 students earned 10 a piece for the answering of their questions.

Slytherin- 15

Hufflepuff- 15

Gryffindor- 15
