Herbology First Lesson: First Years

Walking around, her classroom she admitted that it was more than she expected. Last time she had been in Hogwarts the windows were never this big, nor clean enough to allow enough sunlight for the plants to thrive.

She placed the last potted Shrivelfig on the last desk. It might have been her first year teaching, but it was their first year learning so she figured it'd work out fine. With a flick of her wand the doors opened and she allowed herself to enjoy the smell of the Greenhouse.

Tessa had manged to get to the greenhouse without falling. She thought that she was doing better than she thought she would. But she knew that she should never second guess herself.

She then walked in and found a desk. Tessa smiled cause she knew that she was going to enjoy this class.

Xander wondered how interesting this class was going to be. Potions was by far his favorite subject, but to really understand it, he needed to understand the different plants that would be used. He knew it was important, but just hoped it wouldn't be boring.

As he walked into the greenhouse he spotted a Gryffindor that was in his potions class as well. Deciding to say hi, he took a seat at desk next to hers, in case Luke showed up, and turn to talk to her.

"The name's Xander Clarke. Please to meet you." He held out his hand to her.

Tessa felt that someone sat next to her. And it wasn't somebody that she knew. But she should get used to it, cause she didnt' know everybody at Hogwarts.

She smiled a little bit. " Tessa Grey." She then put out her hand, she knew that she didn't grab his hand. And knew that he would ask her why.

Xander took the girls had. She had a funny distant look to her eyes. As if she was in a trance and not really seeing him. But she seemed genuine.

"Tessa, is it? Do you mind if I ask about your eyes?"

He was trying very hard not to be his usual flirt self. Tess's reaction at the party made him think that maybe it wasn't the best approach for Hogwarts students. So he tried to just be honest.

Walking in, he rolled his eyes seeing Xander already flirting with a girl. He let out a small smirk and shook his head walking towards the front of the class. He stared at the pot in curiosity and poked it trying to see what it was.

He decided perhaps it wasn't bright, and he placed his books and satchel to his side. Turning to face the teacher he saw that she definitely looked like a plant person, with her sunny disposition and her prettiness. He'd rather not get distracted, so he shook his head and looked at his book.

Tessa sighed a little bit, she knew that everybody would soon find out.

" I am blind, that is why my eyes look different."

She then waited to see how he would react to that.

Xander had never met someone who was blind before. He couldn't imagine not being able to see things. But then, he'd heard that other senses get heightened when one is lost. Maybe it would be bareable.

"I'm not trying to pry, really, I'm just curious. How have you been getting around in the magical realm? Is there a spell or something that helps you?"

His curiosity was piqued now. If it was a potion he wanted to know all about it.

Tessa smiled. " Professor Slytherin gave me a spell that helps me get around the castle." She then paused to gather her thoughts.

" I usually depend on my other senses to help me." Tessa could that that he was curious. " Like right now, I can tell that you are very curious. I know you are going to keep asking me questions. Which I like, because that means someone can understand what it is like."

Seeing that enough people had entered, she walked away from the window and towards the front of the class. With a bright smile, she hopped on her desk and as casually as possible picked up her personal pot.

"Welcome students. I am Professor Del Sol, and I am your Herbology teacher. Herbology is the study of magical plants that aid us in everything from potions, to magical salves that aid in the Hospital Wing. By the end of the year, I do hope that you learn to appreciate plants for what they are, aides in life"

She caressed the leaves of her Shrivelfig and smiled.

"This is a Shrivelfig, can anyone guess what potion uses the Shrivelfig?" she asked.

Tessa rasied her hand.

" Is it the Shrinking Solution?"

She smiled seeing that the girl answered her question and listened to her answer.

"Yes correct, five points for Gryffindor. Now...can anyone tell me another spell, for double the points?"

She knew that not a lot of students knew this, but it would see just how many people did do their reading and read ahead even.

Luke raised his brow at Tessa's answer. While that was partially right, there was another answer. Hearing her question, he knew the answer because his mother was a Potions master before her death.

Raising his hand he took a deep breath and forced himself to say.

"Elixer to Induce Euphoria" he replied.

It had to be right. The bright yellow potion always made his mother happy because that was it was for.

She clapped her hands in excitement that someone knew and she laughed lightly. When knowledge was heard, she always got excited especially in Herbology.

"Good! Someone's read! Five points to Slytherin!" she cheered.

"Now, today we will be simply pealing them off and you will learn about their importance in these potions" she said smiling. "Please pick up your pot and find ripe Shrivelfigs. They will be soft and will be a dark shade of purple"

Xander was surprised Luke had known that. He knew their shared family was big on potions, but that specific one was one he didn't know. Also, Luke looked like it was a chore to even speak of it.

He made a mental note to talk to him about it later.

Getting settled in front of his plant, Xander opened his book to find out any specific instructions for pealing off the leaves. After reading intently, he gave it a go and carefully pealed the first one. It gave a little resistance, not wanting to rip it. Once it was detatched he laid it out on the table to take notes. He attempted to draw a crude diagram of it, knowing he wasn't as good as his cousin.

Lily walked around the classroom and admired how each student did their picking differently. Xander for example drew diagrams and she was glad that some students cared that much.

She placed her hand on his shoulder and smiled bright.

"Well aren't you a bright one! Good job, it's as if you know I will put this in the end of the year exams!"

She winked and walked on.

"Now students, we will cultivate these figs for the Potions class and for Professor Valentine!" she said. "Once you are done picking two each, we will move one towards the next plant that you will be planting yourselves! Please put on your gloves, for this plant is very poisonous"

She didn't need any gloves herself because she had grown immunity to it.

"Can anyone tell me another name for Aconite?" she asked.

Xander raised his hand, having read about this during the summer. "Aconite is also refered to as monkshood or wolfsband. The latter because it used to be used to poison weapons for hunting wolves."

He found it quite interesting that one plant could have more than one name. He quickly finished plucking the second leaf, having a much easier time not that he understood how it was attached.

Pulling on his gloves, he was looking forward to the next plant. He had never thought he could be good at herbology, but it seemed just as in depth as potions.

Tessa had her gloves on, she did her best to pick the leaves off of the plant. This was something that would calm her down and she loved doing it. Or maybe it was because she was out in the Herbology Greenhouse. She thought that this might be one of her favortite classes.

She was curious to see what this was going to be used for in her potions class.

Lily giggled in glee and nodded.

"Good Mr. Clarke, seems that someone did do their reading! Five Points to Slytherin."

Looking at the shrivelfigs and smiled satisfied.

"Seems like Professor Valentine might like the amount we collected!"

Hearing the bell ring though, she frowned seeing time was up.

"Seems that Wolfsbane might have to wait...that will be our next lesson then!" she said smiling. "For our time is up. I do hope you see the beauty of Herbology and appreciate plants a little more"

Wrinkling her nose, she sent a friendly wink to her class.

"Now I won't be like other stuffy professors and give you homework for the break. So now my little students, class dismissed!"

She didn't feel like homework was necessary and she felt like she didn't want to correct it either.
