Second Lesson- First Years Empty Second Lesson- First Years

Post by Guest Tue Feb 28, 2012 8:19 am

Angelus was very excited about how everyone seemed to be jumping into their lessons this weeks he had spent time planing on what they were going to do. He thought he would talk a little about the Salem witch trials and see what he class knew about them.

According to his roster he had three students one of them was new so he was thrilled to speak with them.

Angelus went over to the board and wrote the following.:

"In 25 words or less tell me what you think when you hear Salem Witch Trials."

Angelus thought this was a great way to start the lesson, plus it would give them something to so as the students trickle in.

Anne Walked into history of magic, slightly scared. She dislike looking into the past, she always prefered to look foward.

She looked at the board: In 25 words or less tell me what you think when you hear Salem Witch Trials.

she pulled out a peice of parchment and wrote

June to September 1692, nineteen men and women, all having been convicted of witchcraft, were carted to Gallows Hill, for hanging.

Tessa was led into the classroom by Yasmina. She then sat down, she was sure if there was something on the board that someone would have told her.

Xander walked in and sighed. Seems like the Gryffindors have bred! Before he only had to deal with one. Now there was two. Not that he had anything against Gryffindors specifically. They just generally made him feel exhausted with their energy.

Taking his seat he pulled out a parchment, ready to write. He figured the others would give very historical renditions of the events, so he thought he'd have a little fun.

Very possibly a group of stupid American witches and wizards that didn't know how to be smart about practicing magic, so they paid for it.

He knew the professor may not like it, but it was something other than dates and facts. Besides, what was history without a little bit of interpretation?

Second Lesson- First Years Empty Re: Second Lesson- First Years

Post by Kasey Flynn Tue Feb 28, 2012 4:47 pm

Kasey yawned as he walked in, not looking very amused. He wasn't very pleased to be here, quite simply put. History was a bore, nothing more to it then that.

He sat down in a seat near the front and hooked his bag on the back of his chair. He was about to reach in for his novel when he saw something written on the board. Salem Witch Trials, hmm? Now that was something that was a little bit interesting. The psychology behind those muggles especially. He quickly whipped out a parchment and quill, and he set to writing.

A mass hysteria causing the persecution and death of many men and women, not all of which were of magical heritage. Development of Flame-Freezing charm.

He sighed, setting his quill down, and then reached onto his bag once more for his book, starting to read.

Angelus looked around the classroom and noticed that everyone that was suppose to be in the class had arrive. He also had noticed he had a late addition to the class.

"Welcome to the class, and today we are going to discuss the Salem Witch Trials. I asked you to write down your thought on the matter and Anne I would like to award you 5 points for helping your classmate. Next time Tessa I will make sure to add a speaking charm for you."

Angelus started to walk around the room "now can anyone tell me what they wrote down?"

Tessa then was trying to remember what she read from The Crucible. She the rasied her hand. " The reason why the girls where accusing people of being witches is because of the moldy barley and mushrooms. And if they didn't stop, there would be nobody left."

As the professor began to walk around, Kasey marked his page and put away his book. He read over what he wrote, listening to what the two gryffindors had said already.

"Well, because of some sort of mass hysteria that had erupted, the muggles persecuted and put to death quite a few people, the ones that did die were actually muggles themselves. And it may have been in Europe that the Flame-Freezing charm developed, but during this time, I think it spread to the Americas because of fear that it would get as bad as it did in Europe."

He set his paper back down, what he had based his answer on. He crossed out the end where he wrote it was developed at the time and re-wrote that it spread to there.

Xander sighed and raised his hand. Trying to add a little humor, he read from his paper.

"Very possibly a group of stupid American witches and wizards that didn't know how to be smart about practicing magic, so they paid for it. Though that's all speculation, of course."

He figured he'd at least say something without repeating the same facts as everyone else. Probably a bad idea, though.

Angelus could not help but laugh a little at the way the Slytherin boy said it.

"Mr Clarke that was diffidently a way to put it. That is why we we have laws of secrecy and also why we have schools and rules for underage magic" Angelus grinned

"10 points for everyone and their answers, they are all correct."

"So can some of you explain the laws we have now?"

Kasey shot his hand into the air again, his father always stressed these precautions to the rest of the family. He found it odd his father knew these laws better then his wizarding mother.

"Well most importantly is the International Statute of Secrecy, where the wizarding world must be kept a secret from the muggle world in order to stay protected. We do that by controlling magical beasts, keeping a close eye on under-aged magic, and dressing like muggles when around them." He sighed then thought for a moment.

"Oh- These laws were made around the time of the Salem Witch Trials, weren't they?"

Anne put up her hand and said, "Sir, we have so many laws, to recite them all would be impractical, but the international statue of secrecy came into play because of the Salem Witch Trials, if I recall correctly."

"That was a very good explanation Mr. Flynn. 10 points to Ravenclaw. Angelus smiled. He loved it when he could award points to his house.

Angelus had a feeling about Ms. Jones but at the time he kept them to himself.

"Thank you for pointing that out Ms. Jones, but I wasn't wanting you to tell me all of them at once. I was wanting to have a discussion on some of them."

Angelus was not one of those teachers that like to take points but he did not appreciate her cheek.

"Ms. Jones I would like to point out that this is my class and if I wish you to name all of the laws then I expect it to be done. Minus 10 points for trying to tell me how to run my class." Angelus looked directly at her.

"I expect you Ms. Jones to write me a 2 page essay on the different laws that we have."

Angelus walked around the room looking for the next person.

"Alright who has any more ideas."

Anne sighed she had now lost points for her house. She now remembered why she disliked History of Magic, there was no magic involved. She decided to keep to herself for the rest of the class, and work on her essay. Her head was pounding, she didn't want to be here.

Kasey smiled, proud to earn points for his house. He rolled his eyes at the Anne girl though. He'd practically had to memorize all the secrecy laws. Knowing all of them was important.

He took note of professor Moody's strict seeming punishment, and would be sure not to mouth off and get himself and extra essay. Maybe this class wouldn't be so bad after all he thought.

When the other Gryffindor, Tessa has asked about keeping the secrets, Kasey could hear his father's voice droning on in his head. He spoke out, "Because of things that have happened in the past, like the Salem Witch Trials, we keep secret in order to protect ourselves. There are exceptions for trusted people like spouses or muggle families of magical kids, not to mention that the Muggle Prime Minister and the Minister of Magic have to be very close in order to keep some secrets from muggle society."

Tessa then did her best to face Kasey. " Yes but there was no witches in the Salem witch trails. If I found someone that I didn't like, I could point at them and say they where a witch. It was the moldy mushrooms and barley that was causing all of this."

"No one cares about the mushrooms and Barley." Kasey felt himself roll his eyes. Some people just got too caught up in the details to see the big picture.

"Even if it was, the blame was still placed on Witches and Wizards. The fact that it happened was what was frightening. Plus, the same things were happening all over Europe. Not just in America, in Salem he argued back.

Second Lesson- First Years Empty Re: Second Lesson- First Years

Post by Xander Clarke Mon Mar 05, 2012 4:51 am

Xander took note of the professor's reaction to Anne. He realized he'd have to toe that line a little more carefully, in the future. While he didn't care much about most of his house just because they were sorted together, he did take pride in his own personal gained points.

He didn't really know the Ravenclaw, but he liked his blatant use of logic. Siding with Kasey, he said, "It's not about the muggles prancing around as witches, because they obviously aren't. If a real witch or wizard was to be found out, especially in this age with all of the technology and recording devices muggles have, it would put us all in danger. Real magic is a lot more than just candles and words."

While he didn't fully comprehend the extent of muggle technology, his father had described it to him and he hated the idea of it all.

Second Lesson- First Years Empty Re: Second Lesson- First Years

Post by Guest Mon Mar 05, 2012 7:26 am

Tessa looked at Kasey. " There was only one proven case of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trails." She then remembed all the information about the Slave. " Tituba was a 17th-century slave belonging to Samuel Parris of Salem, Massachusetts. Tituba was one of the first three people accused of practicing witchcraft during the Salem witch trials which took place in 1692. Tituba was the first person accused by Betty Parris and Abigail Williams of witchcraft. She was also the first person to confess to witchcraft in Salem Village.

She at first denied that she had anything to do with witchcraft, but was then quickly coerced into confessing to having spoken with the Devil. Betty and Abigail then went on to accuse the other two women, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. Other women and men from surrounding villages were accused of witchcraft and arrested at the Salem witchcraft trials. Not only did Tituba accuse others in her confession, but she talked about black dogs, hogs, a yellow bird, red and black rats, cats, and a wolf. Tituba talked about riding sticks to different places. Tituba confessed that Sarah Osborne possessed a creature with the head of a woman, two legs, and wings. By mixing the different views on witchcraft she unintentionally set Salem Village into chaos by hinting that Satan was among them.

She sighed, she knew that she was fighting a losing battle.

Post by Kasey Flynn Mon Mar 05, 2012 9:32 am

Kasey had looked over when the Slytherin had given his answer, he raised his eyebrows and smiled a bit before turning back to the front.

When the girl had gone on and on about her story, Kasey sighed, almost groaning. He wasn't going to have a stupid, circular argument with a stubborn Gryffindor girl. Details, details, those hardly mattered in the course of the big picture. Did she just entirely disregard everything other then her narrow point she was trying to make, whatever it was.

Kasey just shook his head, looking down at the desk and crossing his arms.

Angelus knew that he had better stepped into the mess before it got any farther.

"Now you all can understand how these witch trials effected people. They all got heated up over each others beliefs on who was a witch and who wasn't"

Angelus knew they all had different opinions but a good debate was always welcome.

"I am going to award each of you 10 points for a good debate and no assignment for the week. Class dismissed."

Angelus was glad for a change of pace.
