Tess shrugged and looked at the girl.

"It's fine...I just sometimes have to remind myself that we're all a bit prejudice. It's a shame" she said softly. "I understand...I do. I wish just that everyone would forget about these historical strifes in our houses"

She was glad that the conversation was changed and she gladly moved with it.

"My mother went to Beauxbatons, she learned French fluently and I grew up around it"

Vero looked back and Tess with sad eyes.

"I understand what you mean. My mama always told me stories about the war and the battles fought all leading up to it. I guess that Britain has a new enemy." That last sentence may have been true but it still stung that her home was the home to the people who hated the English.

"Really? My mama learned just French to conceal her real identity. She dropped out of Hogwarts to be a gypsy when she was in her fourth year." She sighed.

She nodded and frowned.

"Yes..the Germans. I...I've been at the other side of the wand and they really hate the English" she whispered.

She remembered the attack vividly. It oftentimes haunted her, and gave her the cynicism that she never had prior to it. Still, she found herself trying hard to move on and be cheerier.

"Why did she do that?" she asked curiously.

Vero thought carefully before uncrossing her legs and stretching them to think of why her mama would do that.

"Because she wanted the freedom that she could never have at Hogwarts." She mumbled before her eyes widened when she realized Tess's previous statement.

"Wait, what happened?" Vero asked cautiously before adding, "there's no need to tell me if you don't want to." She patted Tess's arm awkwardly to try to add comfort.

She nodded and wondered exactly how someone would be so brave and leave to do something so spontaneous as to go off and be free. She definitely was not brave enough, she was ambitious and knew it'd be impossible to be successful and wealthy through dropping out.

"Well...we were attacked. Last year, my first year....it was...chaotic to say the least"s he said softly.

Vero listened and sighed gently patting Tess's shoulder again smiling at her while tilting her head. She felt guilty about how Germany, her once home, had done this to the world.

"Hey, I'm sorry you'll just be fine. You're a strong person, Tess. I can tell by the way you hold yourself understood. I'm sorry." She replied back retracting her hand and holding it in her lap enclasped together tightly as she held her head down.

Tess raised her head and looked at her unsure to how to take the sympathetic pat. She knew she was being at least trying to be sympathetic and smiled softly. She patted her hand back as Vero looked down at her hands.

"Thank you." she said.

While Vero didn't really know her she was glad that she thought she was strong. It was comforting and she sighed softly.

"Sorry to dampen the mood" she said smirking trying to lighten everything up.

Vero shrugged before reaching into the pocket of her robe and pulling out a sour quill and placing it strategically in her mouth to suck on in thought.

"Awh, it's fine. I'm sure the only way to ever worsen a mood is to kill me so you're doing fine so far." She stated shrugging and grinning crookedly.

"Hey, what's your favorite kind of candy?" She asked now that her mind was stuck on candy.

She laughed softly and covered her mouth trying to calm down. Vero was nice enough, she genuinely liked her. That was honestly a breakthrough considering how she felt about perky people.

"I like this muggle candy? My friend made me try...smarties? Yes I enjoy those greatly" she said smiling.

Vero noticed how Tess had quickly tried to hide her laugh and she smiled faintly. It was a trait that mama had given her, she guessed. Mama was always bright and happy. Random, yes, but she picked up the pace where sadness or a down depression left off.

"Smarties..." She trailed off in thought gently touching her chin before grinning. "Are they chocolate and covered in bright shells? They remind me of M&M's; if you know them." She added the last quickly in case she didn't.

Tess wrinkled her nose at the mention of M&Ms; she had tried them from Alice and found that she disliked it greatly.

"I'm not a fan of chocolate" she said. "No Smarties is a wafer sort of candy, they are different colors meaning different flavors. American version of Fizzers?"

Vero made an 'ooh' face before grinning again apologetically this time.

"That one, my bad. I know two Smarties; one from Britain and then you are correct the Smarties from Fizzers." She replied. "Those kinds, I love those too." She pouted. "I love any kind of candy." She stated nervously.

Tess wrinkled her nose.

"I'm not really once for sweets" she said softly. "I guess it fits my character"

She laughed a bit at that. She remembered when she was younger she loved sweets, but her taste pallet changed the older she got.

"I prefer sour and spicy foods myself" she said. "But it's nice you like candies, sweets kinda fit your personality"

She said with a small grin.

Vero giggled when she realized the small joke and she gently tapped the tip of Tess's nose.

"You're not that sour either, you could be worse." She complimented.

"Hey, don't mistake sweet for ditzy here, Tessy. I'll have you know I do the difference between left and right." She joked back.

Tess blinked as she felt her nose tightly tapped. She wiggled it and let out a grin. Vero was amusing to say the least, and for a first year and a Gryffindor at that, she didn't mind. She giggled a bit and shrugged.

"Well I may be more sour than you think" she replied back with a smirk.

It wasn't true of course, as snarky as she tried to be, it wasn't in her nature. Merlin the year before she had the personality of a weak-willed Hufflepuff.

"Do you know the difference?" she teased and winked amused.

Vero giggled and smiled at Tess. She was happy to meet new people and needless to say Tess was included. As long as this didn't end in her death, befriending a Slytherin isn't that bad.

"Sure," she nodded sarcastically but still grinning teasingly.

"Indeed a ditz is a scatterbrained person and a bubbly person is a person with high spirits, i.e me!" She exclaimed smiling still.

Tess grinned cheekily and shook her head amused. Vero was pretty amusing, even though they were on the opposite side of personalities. She didn't say anything, despite the fact that she realized she was called "Tessy" not too long ago.

"Good to know the difference" she said amused.

She looked out the window and smiled innocently at the girl.

"Say, what are you doing during break?"she asked.

Vero shrugged. Tess was a pretty secretive person but she was fascinating and fascinating people interested her. Interesting people always made her day.

"I'm proud I do," she smirked.

"Not sure, probably going to work at my h-home. And you Tess? Plan on doing anything interesting? I'm not doing anything besides hanging around my h-home." She replied. She stuttered over not saying the word Pub.

Tess tilted her head and looked at her curiously. She wasn't the most open person, but he has impeccable people reading schools. She knew she should push her or force her to open up, so she don't instead she plate it cool.

"Travelling somewhere probably. Never really ever told were I am going. Use to it really" she commented flippantly.
