Herbology First Lesson: Second Years Empty Herbology First Lesson: Second Years

Post by Lily Del Sol Fri Feb 17, 2012 7:55 am

Placing the last potted plant of Mandrake she placed the earmuffs beside it as well. She was particularly nervous for this class, because of the fact that she was teaching second years. Second years already knew how it worked here and seeing a new Professor they might not accept her as such.

Don't be nervous she thought to herself.

With a deep breath, she walked to her desk and caressed the leaves of her Mandrake. It was quiet, but not for long as the students were to walk in any moment.

Victoria was excited for Herbology. She hadn't taken the class last year and was excited since she had been reading the text book for the class over the summer.

As she walked in she saw pots with plants in them on each desk. As she said "Hello, Professor," she took a seat near the front and took out her book, trying to find a picture that matched the plant. She wanted to be as prepared as possible for the lesson.

Leshia walked into the class and noticed there was a new teacher. It had to be because there mandrakes and she could have sworn that they had those last time, but that is ok that class was short and sweet and never got to finish.

Walking into the class she saw Victoria sitting there so she walked over to where she was sitting.

"Hey Victoria whats up?"

Parker sighed as he walked into the greenhouses. He realized how stuffy it always felt in here. It wasn't always bad, sometimes it was even nice after a crisp air, but at the moment it just made him feel a bit more irritated. He gave a small smile to the prof. as he walked over to the other end of the room, setting his things down, looking at the other plants around the edges of the greenhouse.

After a few moments, he decided to take out a notebook and quill, starting to write.

Victoria was happy to see Leisha. She didn't know the girl very well and thought this class would be a good way to get to know her. She smiled.

"Nothing much. Thought I'd give this class a try this year. Were you in it last year?"

She felt bad for missing out on things, but hadn't really known what some things were when she signed up for classes last year.

"Yes I was but something happened with the teacher."

Leshia just remembers coming in to learn the lesson and then nothing ever came out of it.

"The only lesson we had were these but since we didn't learn anything I am glad we are doing it again." Leshia smiles.

"So what made you decided to take the class? Hay Parker whats up?"

Entering the classroom, she noticed that it was a big change from her other classes. It was bright and she admitted that she liked it to far. She loved plants, and she regretted not taking the class last year. Entering the classroom, she noticed that it was a Professor that she didn't see in the Great Hall for their commencement speech.

She smiled softly at the Professor and she walked right next to Victoria and sat herself down. She did hope that they learned more about Herbology. Her curiosity did peak as soon as she saw the earmuffs.

Leshia started talking to Victoria when Tess walked in.

"Hey Tess, come to join the fun have you?"

Leshia was beginning to wonder where the teacher was, she hoped another teacher didn't back out of the class.

She smiled and shrugged.

"What can I say, I love plants" She said smiling.

And she did. Bleeding hearts always got to her, they were the most beautiful plants to her and even though they were not really used for magical purpose (thought an ingredient for love potions) she found them gorgeous.

"Want to see why Herbology is important" she admitted.

Noticing that her class was filling up, she decided to start her class. Propped up on her desk she let out a smile towards every student that smiled at her. She liked how friendly they were and she felt that their aura was beautiful.

"Hello students. I am Professor Del Sol and I will be your new Herbology professor. Now I don't know if you have studied Mandrakes yet, but I will tell you that I will be teaching you these fascinating yet misunderstood plants."

Smiling she picked up her earmuffs.

"Does anyone know why you all have earmuffs?" she asked.

Leshia knew the answer to this all too well so she raised her hand.

"Professor the earmuffs are so the cry of these baby mandrakes does not knock us out."

Leshia patiently waited for confirmation from the teacher.

Smiling brightly she nodded.

"Very good, five points to Ravenclaw!" she said.

Placing the earmuffs around her neck she hopped off her desk and walked down the aisles.

"Now students. You must put on your earmuffs when we pull out these baby mandrakes. A Mandrake, also known as Mandragora, is a plant which has a root that looks like a human ,like a baby when the plant is young, but maturing as the plant grows. Today we will be picking them out and merely observing them. All of them are baby because their cry can be fatal."

Leshia did as she was told, she placed on her earmuffs. It was the weirdest feeling to have these things on. She looked at the others around her and was glad she was not the only one who looked funny with them on.

Looking at the pot in front of her she placed her hand on the leafs of this plant and pulled it straight out. She could tell by looking at it, it was screaming. She was just glad she could not hear it.

Looking at the creature closely she placed it back in the pot and took out her parchment and quills and began taking notes on the mandrake, every once in awhile pulling it back out of the pot for another look.

"Memo to self, do not place finger in its mouth, if you want you finger back" Leshia laughed as she wrote that note.

Parker secured his earmuffs, ready to deal with the weird looking plant before them. He looked over at Leshia and furrowed his eyebrows, holding his earmuffs tight over his ears as he saw the creature. What an ugly, disgusting looking thing.

Without taking out his own that was sitting in front of him, he looked over at Leshia's he took down his notes on the Mandrake. He really didn't want to have to hold that thing.

Victoria was taking notes and barely had time to get her earmuffs on before Leisha grabbed her mandrake and pulled. Boy, she's eager. She smiled at the Ravenclaw's incentive.

Seeing the one Leisha was holding made her cringe. She had looked after her baby cousin before and she looked nothing like that!

Taking a deep breath, Victoria grabbed her mandrake and pulled. It was ugly as all get out and angry. She took a long look so she didn't have to pull it out more than necessary. She may not like it, but the thing obviously had feelings and didn't like being out of the pot.

She fumbled slightly and placed the earmuffs deafening her from the cries of the Mandrake babies. She winced slightly and grabbed her pot too and picked up the Mandrake.

She winced at the crying baby, because while she couldn't really see how this was considered like a human baby. Ugh it was disgusting looking and the wailing, while she couldn't hear it, she knew it was annoying.

'If this is what babies are supposed to look like, I am not having kids' she thought wrinkling her nose.

Lily laughed slightly seeing the students all react differently towards the Mandrakes. She was glad that no student had fainted and she walked around.

She took out her wand and pointed towards herself.

"Sonorus"

Soon she knew she could be heard even over the cries of the Mandrakes.

"Mandrakes look just like human babies and like humans they grow to adults. Can anyone tell me what Mandrakes can be used for?" she asked.

As more screaming ugly baby plants joined in to the terrible chorus of wailing inside the greenhouse, Parker more snugly pressed his earmuffs to his ears. What he could hear of the dull screaming through the earmuffs shot a shiver down his spine. Something about the tone of it felt very wrong and almost familiar. Impossible. These were magical, and he was muggle born, living in a muggle place and muggle city. He tried to shake off the thought as he took more notes.

When the prof. asked about the use of a Mandrake, he tried to remember the section he'd read about them the previous year. Parker raised his hand and tried to yell over the many screams of the plants. "They are used in Mandrake Restorative Draught! To cure Petrifaction!" He held his hands over the muffs still, hoping the prof. had heard him.

Hearing Mr. Emery, barely that is, she smiled brightly and nodded.

"Yes! Good Mr. Emery, five points!" she called back out.

She waved her wand and took the Mandrake babies from their hands. The pots lifted themselves and the Mandrake babies were placed back into their pots. She waved them towards her desk and all of them would be replanted.

The cries immediately stopped and she smiled brightly once more.

"Beautiful job students!" she said smiling. "I feel like while you might view these plants as horrible, or ugly, but in reality.."

She picked up one of the Mandrake babies and it didn't cry out as she cradled it as if it was really a baby, it only whimpered. She had grown up with them around her home and she felt that this would show students how your passion in a subject would make a different.

"They are just like us" she said softly. "Class dismissed"

Placing the Mandrake baby back in it's pot, and began to water them humming softly. This lesson turned out better than expected.
