First Encounter (Adrian and Kiera)

Adrian Castella was still getting used to being an Auror. He had just been given the job, and was proud of himself. It had taken a lot of hard work to get where he was. Tonight, he was celebrating his success. Though he didn't have any friends, Adrian really didn't care, he was a loner. Ever since his first love was killed, well he didn't see the point in having them.

Taking another shot of firewhiskey, Adrian looked around. So far there hadn't been anybody interesting to talk to. Hopefully that would change, meeting people and having a conversation was something he enjoyed. So many people were just plain odd, and he liked hearing their opinions about things. For now, he would just stay at the bar, might move out on the dance floor later.

Kiera walked towards the bar at Brimstone, and let out an aggravated sigh. Did her contact really find no other better place than a club to hold a meeting about their next dealing? Not to mention the fact of course that her contact was late. As usual. Ugh.

Kiera sat down at the bar next to a man that appeared to be her age, and ordered the bartender for the strongest thing he had. If she continued to deal with such idiots, she was definitely going to need it.

A pretty black-haired woman his age walked into the bar and sat down next to him. She ordered a drank, and she was clearly aggravated about something. Well, she did appear more interesting than the other people here.

"Hello, rough day there?" he asked her. "I'm Adrian by the way." Adrian told her, introducing himself. This woman was definitely pretty, he hadn't dated since Felicity had died. Wasn't planning on dating, but still nice to look.

Kiera made another sound of irritation as the man sitting next to her, Adrian as he introduced himself, started to make conversation. Ugh, couldn't he see that she wasn't in a mood to talk? Add to that the fact that she wasn't one for socializing anyway. "Yes, I've had a rough day, and if you don't want it to become worse, do me a favour and ignore me."

The man, Adrian, was dressed in Auror robes. He had dark hair, and wasn't good-looking in the conventional sense, but he had a magnetism that drew eyes. Kiera observed the man looking at her, and commented in a drawl, "You know, if you don't want your eyes gouged out, I suggest you look somewhere else."

Clearly this woman didn't want to talk to him, she considered him an irritation. However, he wasn't one to get turned away so easily. Adrian wanted to talk with her and he would do so. "Well well, aren't we a bit testy. I would ignore you, but there isn't anybody else interesting to talk to in this place. Besides, maybe insulting me will make you feel better."

He wasn't sure what she was thinking, but he did admire the fact that she was so fiery. Turning away from her, Adrian took another sip of his firewhiskey. Then he couldn't help but look back, and he smiled at her. "You know, I'm not one to be put off by intimidation. I must ask though, are you always this short-tempered or is this a rare occurrence?"

"Oh I'm absolutely flattered by your concern." Kiera's sarcasm was very thinly-veiled. "I'm glad that you think so much of my feelings, but I'd rather you leave me alone."

Then Adrian sipped his firewhisky, and turned back to her again. Kiera groaned inwardly. Why, oh why did things like these always happen to her? Couldn't the man see that she wanted to be alone? But no, he appeared to be just as stubborn as her. So she bit out harsher than ever, "As difficult as it may be to believe, but I'm actually not this short-tempered with everyone. All credit for my present mood goes to the present company." Kiera inclined her head mockingly.

This woman was already starting to grate on his nerves a bit. "What's bothering you so much, aside from me that is? " Adrian asked her. The sarcasm wasn't lost on him, she was certainly annoyed with him already.

He noted the iciness in her tone; however, he was determined to keep talking to her. Adrian couldn't say why, but there was something about her that had caught his attention. "I don't find it difficult to believe at all, and I'm not trying to aggravate you. Listen, I'm sorry about what I just said, that was rude. Would you mind forgetting about it and starting over? Sometimes I can be a bit of a prick."

What's bothering me so much? Now let's see.....that's a long list indeed...... Kiera took the ice-cold drink in front of her, it was called the Dragon's Breath, and took a long draught. Mmm, heady and strong, but good. "Well, I have no clue why I'm telling you this, but since you're absolutely refusing to go away, the business contact I'm supposed to be meeting here is horribly late, and so I'm getting annoyed with him, you, and the world in general."

Then Kiera paused for a second. Adrian had struck her as the typical irritating Auror who couldn't keep his curiosity to himself, but he had just surprised her by apologizing. No matter how annoyed Kiera was, she knew that she was the one being rude, and frankly she couldn't give a damn. And yet, Adrian was the one who apologized. That was a bit.....different. "Well, frankly you're not the only one being prick-ish here. I guess if you want to start over and...talk, you could do so since I'm so generally annoyed anyway, but don't expect me to give too much of a contribution."

"Ah, a business meeting. What kind of business do you do?" Adrian asked her. She was definitely enjoying that drink of hers, she kind of needed it in his opinion. "I have been told I'm annoying before. What's annoying about the world in general though?"

He could tell that his apology caught her off guard. Hmm, she was probably thinking he was a stuck-up auror, he got that a lot. "That's alright, I can talk enough for both of us. What's your name by the way? I completely forgot to ask you." Adrian was glad that she admitted acting a bit prick-ish as well, it made him grin just a bit.

Hmmm, Adrian wanted to know what business she did? Fine, Kiera thought with a smirk, he would get it and more. Maybe that would finally prompt him to give up and make conversation with someone else. "I'm a weapons dealer. I occasionally craft, always deal in, and love wielding weapons. Highly dangerous, illegal weapons."

"As for what's annoying about the world, the fact that people like the person I'm supposed to be meeting is in it." Then when Adrian commented about talking enough for both of them, Kiera's lips quirked for half a second. "The name's Kiera de Auvergne. Being an Auror, you probably haven't heard of me, coz you probably don't hang around in the illegal circles." Kiera knew she was just asking for trouble saying such implicating things to an Auror, but she just couldn't bring herself to care. Moreover, Adrian, in the few seconds that she had known him, didn't seem like the kind of person to be such a stickler for rules anyway, despite his profession.

Weapons dealer was definitely a shock, but he had to admit she did seem dangerous enough. After he thought about it, Adrian decided that it seemed like a good fit. "I got to say, it suits you. You do seem like you would be good at that job, certainly appear dangerous enough. Illegal weapons are probably the most fun, am I right?" he asked her. Though he didn't know much about weapons, he was sure it was an interesting job.

"It is bad manners to keep somebody waiting. Of course, you could be talking about something else. I'm sure your clientele doesn't always involve the most upstanding citizens." He would have to visit her at work sometime. "Can't say I have, and I don't normally. Do you have a shop or something, I'd love to visit you at work? Always been interested in weapons, though I don't know too much about them." Her hanging out in illegal circles didn't bother him too much, she didn't seem the type to cause too much trouble. Certainly she would get up to some, but instinct said she wasn't too bad.

"Fun? Oh you have no idea." Kiera took another sip of her drink, licking her lips slightly in appreciation. "If course if you're the non-violent type, which judging by your Auror robes, you most certainly are not, then your definition and my definition of fun can be quite different."

"Upstanding citizens? Oh no, most certainly not." Kiera continued replying to Adrian's questions, all the while wondering internally on why she was talking so amiably with a man she had been so annoyed with minutes ago. Maybe she had just gotten tired of being annoyed, it was rather taxing. "Well, I own a weapons armory at Knockturn, Cruor Sanctorum. And what do you mean by 'love to visit me at work'? If you're trying to flirt, then let me warn you that I don't respond well to such things. In other words, you're probably risking your limbs."

He could tell that she loved her job, which was a good thing. "Violence has never been something I minded, and I can tell that you don't mind it either. You know, I'm a bit jealous of your job actually, being an Auror is great; but, being a weapons dealer might be even more interesting."

It was odd, just a couple minutes ago Kiera was infinitely annoyed with him, and now she was being friendly. Adrian wasn't sure what had changed, but he definitely liked the friendly Kiera better. "Ah, good location for it, if people don't want to be seen that is a good place to go. Merlin, no! I'm interested in seeing and learning more about your weapons. After how annoyed you got with me earlier I wouldn't try flirting with you. I'm not that stupid."

"You bet it is." Kiera absentmindedly tapped her long fingers on her glass. "Interesting is not quite the word for it though.....adventurous is more like it."

Then Adrian smiled at her, and Kiera inwardly shook her head. Merlin, she'd never met a more.....chirpy Auror in her life. All the Aurors she'd met till now were sticklers for the rules, overly serious and complete pains in the ass. Though Adrian was definitely the last, the first two criteria didn't quite apply to him. "Glad to see you've got atleast some sense. Coz let me tell you, the last guy who tried to flirt with me.....well, lets just say that the result wasn't pretty." Kiera had quite the gleam in her eyes as she spoke the final words.

"Adventurous, probably a more fitting description. I'm sure you had a lot of it acquiring the weapons. Would ask, but I'm sure most of those are stories you don't want to tell." Kiera seemed like the adventurous type, and certainly had the personality to handle whatever came her way.

"Not the typical Auror type am I? Still not sure how I managed to convince them to let me in, I love it though." Most of the other Aurors thought he was a bit odd, but he didn't really care what they thought. "Not much of it, got a little though. I'll make sure not to piss you off Kiera. Most people I think I could beat in a fight, you...well, I have a feeling it would be a lot more difficult."

"As a matter of fact, those are exactly the kind of stories I would love to tell." Kiera's eyes gleamed, lets see how much this Auror could handle before he went running for his life. She doubted he could stand his ground after hearing some of her more gruesome stories.

"Right now, I have a blade with me which I carry at all times, disillusioned of course. I got it from Nepal, Asia, after battling a tribe of cannibalistic bandits and cutting open the belly of a dragon which breathed fire that froze one's limbs off. The blade has an icy aura and can suck out the life force from anyone, anyone it touches. In other words, the blade feeds on human life." Kiera's smile bared her white canines. "Is that enough, or do you want more?"

"They are? Excellent, glad that you do because I was hoping you might tell me one." Adrian admitted, smiling just a bit. Without a doubt they would be gruesome, but that didn't bother him in the slightest. Those were the kinds of stories he enjoyed listening to the most.

Listening to her story was a new experience, he had to admit he'd never heard one quite like it before. It was quite impressive, really, she must be very talented to have survived. "Wow, that's a pretty unique story, can't say I've heard one like it before. You must be quite the fighter to have come out alive. A blade that feeds on human life, now that's a deadly weapon." She was dangerous, that much was for sure, but he was drawn to her a bit. "Please continue, I quite enjoyed listening to the last story." He smiled back, showing her his pearly whites.

Kiera blinked in surprise. That little anecdote was meant to make him flee for his life, not ask for more. This Adrian was certainly one of the most unusual people she had ever met. Sure, he seemed cheerful and social on the outside, almost annoyingly so, but he sure had enough backbone to withstand her story, and stare her straight into the eye after knowing what she was capable of. And he actually had the nerve to smile while doing it!

"Fine, have what you want." Kiera leaned forward, fixing her gaze on Adrian. "Aswan, Egypt. I stole into a tomb, got sneaked up on by the tomb guards, who by the way, weren't human. My arm was nearly sawed off, I was scalded with black FiendFyre, and I got this: " Kiera extricated a thick, silver chain from underneath the collar of her informal robes. "A cursed Amulet. One which protects, and destroys."

Clearly Kiera had been trying to scare him, but it hadn't worked and she was definitely surprised. He hadn't met many women before who were this anti-social, he enjoyed talking to her though. It was a nice change of pace to meet somebody who had a dangerous job too. She was definitely dangerous though, and he would be sure to be careful around her. Auror training had made sure he could defend himself, he didn't want to test his skills against her though if he could avoid it.

Adrian stared right back at her, and to his surprise noticed she had beautiful eyes. Don't look at her like that you idiot, she meant what she said about hurting guys who flirt with her. He stared at the amulet she pulled out, it was beautiful. "That certainly does look worth all the danger. Your job is definitely more interesting than mine, I'm a bit jealous actually. Hearing this makes me want to go off and do something like that myself." Danger didn't bother him, he enjoyed it, and now he was wanting a bit more of it.

Adrian didn't react to what she said immediately, but instead stared at her. Kiera stared back for sometime, slightly confused on why he wasn't responding, he certainly hadn't missed out on any opportunity to talk before. The look in his eyes for a second, it unnerved her. Kiera looked away, wondering why she was feeling so unsettled all of a sudden, it wasn't like her at all. Then Adrian too looked away, looking slightly regretful, almost as if cursing himself on the inside. For what, Kiera had no clue.

Kiera almost had to pull her attention back as Adrian started talking again, something about the Amulet and how he wished to do such dangerous things as well. Kiera smirked slightly, "You know, I might actually take you up on your wish. After all, you're an Auror, you have access to the Ministry. Just imagine the kind of things we may find in the Department of Mysteries....." Kiera trailed off purposefully.

"Sorry about earlier Kiera, I got lost in my thoughts for a minute there. I was distracted by something, you looked a little uncomfortable. Didn't mean to have that awkward pause there." he explained. Her eyes had just captivated him, it wasn't something that usually happened. For some reason she was more interesting to him than practically anybody he had ever met. She certainly was different, maybe that was all it was.

Exploring the Department of Mysteries was something he had always thought of. It would certainly hold some interesting things, and he wanted to go. That smirk of hers was something Adrian was already starting to like. He smirked right back, "Now that is a pretty good idea. I've always wanted to explore it. Just make sure we don't get caught, I don't want to lose my job over it. Don't steal anything though Kiera, exploration only, we can't leave any evidence of us being there."

"Oh come on, what's a little fun without a little danger?" Choosing to ignore the awkward silence a few moments ago, Kiera's smile could almost be taken for mishievous, only if it had reached her eyes. Still, the smile made her look much more like a normal twenty-three year old woman, rather than the warrior she was. "Besides, what's the use of sneaking into the Department of Mysteries, if you can't take any of the mysteries out? Its not strictly stealing, I prefer to call it borrowing without permission."

"Evidence can be erased easily enough. An Obliviation Charm here, a Confundus Charm there." Kiera took another sip of her drink. "And most of the people in the Department are stupide anyway." Suddenly Kiera realized that she had spoken the French 'stupide' instead of the English 'stupid' and scowled slightly. Oh she hated that language, the one which reminded her of her 'mother', but it was her birth language and it slipped out sometimes.

He chuckled a little bit, she was not one to follow rules was she. "Alright Kiera, I'm in, I haven't done anything like this since a couple silly pranks at Hogwarts." Her mischievous smile made his heart race a bit. Why do I have to like her, she is going to get me in trouble. I just know it, but those black eyes are beautiful. Adrian took another sip real quick, trying to hide the fact that he was attracted to her. "That's something a thief would say, I don't think you are planning on returning anything. But I have to admit I've always been rather curious. You know, you're a bad influence on me, but I don't really care." He told her, laughing a little bit.

"You've convinced me, so when do you want to do this little escapade?" Adrian asked. "They are rather strange, I must admit. I didn't know you spoke French Kiera, you don't have much of an accent." Clearly there was something bad associated with it though, and part of him wanted to ask her what it was. "Why don't you like speaking French Kiera?"

Kiera’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. He agreed. He actually agreed. Was this guy actually an Auror or what? Did he actually not give two pins about the rules, same as her? But this wasn’t just rule breaking, it was law breaking. And Adrian was supposed to be a protector of law.

You’re a bad influence on me. Adrian looked away as he said those words and laughed really quick, as though trying to hide something. Kiera had a niggling feeling at the back of her head that yes, she did seem to exercise a strange influence over Adrian, inspite of them having met only some time back. On a sudden impulse or whim, Kiera brushed her hand lightly over Adrian’s, a fleeting touch, light enough for it to be dismissed as accidental, yet purposeful enough for its presence not to be ignored. She didn’t know why she did it, curiosity to see how Adrian reacted she supposed.

Then Adrian asked her why she didn’t like French, and Kiera’s face darkened. All hints of a smile vanished from her face. “My last name is French, of course I would know the language. As for why I don’t like it….” Her voice lowered to a silken, yet hard-as-nails tone, “I don’t think that’s any of your business.”

Adrian had always wondered if Auror was the right position for him. He enjoyed it, the danger, the thrill of the chase, and when you caught a dark wizard there wasn't a better feeling in the world. The paperwork killed him though, as did the long hours at times. Yes, he supported the Ministry of Magic, but his curiosity had always wanted to explore the Department of Mysteries. Even before he met Kiera, he'd been itching to do it.

Kiera shocked him when her hand brushed across his, and part of him knew that it wasn't an accident. She didn't seem like the type to accidentally touch hands with somebody unless she meant to. It made him freeze, and snapped him out of whatever had been clouding his reason. "About the Department of Mysteries, maybe it's best I don't go. I could find another job of course, but tracking down dark wizards is exciting enough now I think about." He pulled his hand back onto his lap and looked Kiera in the eye. "Also, don't touch my hand unless you are actually interested in me. I'm a loner, and I have my reasons. It's been clear ever since I sat down you weren't interested, so keep your hands to yourself. If you wouldn't mind that is."

"Not everybody with a last name that is obviously from a country knows how to speak that country's language. For all I know you might have only spoken English." When her voice became silky smooth he knew that she was pissed. "Keep your secrets to yourself, I won't pry. It was just a question." He thought it was best to change the subject. "Are you dating anybody Kiera, just out of curiosity. You come across as a bit of a loner, not that that's a bad thing. I'm the same way to be perfectly honest." Adrian knocked back another sip of his drink, he didn't want to think about that deadly tone of Kiera's, it chilled him a bit.
