It's All Greek To Me! (Vikki and Ni)

Niobe had decided that she would like to go and see the place where her brother had decided to live, stupidly, it was one of the red zones for war simply because it had 'Hidden' in it's name, she remembered trying to warm him about living here but it didn't seem to sink in.

Sighing softly she sat on a bench that was close by, swinging her feet off the ground and looking at her striped socks, they were her pride and joy, her large boots were much bigger than her thigh yet somehow still fitted...

With a pout Niobe pulled the rainbow striped beanie, that matched her socks, further onto her head. To anyone who didn't know her she would look like a big kid and even some people who did know her that still thought that. She didn't like them much though.

Unknowingly Niobe lost herself in her thoughts while staring at her shoes.

Viktor was doing one of his least favourite duties as an officer in the German Magical army. He was currently walking down the streets with a small bunch of red roses. He was dressed in his military dress robes, totally black but with some silver and gold models. The flowers were in for the memory of a soldier under his command who had been declared MIA.

He put the flowers down against the man's, little more than a boy really, apartment. Taking a deep breath he stood at attention and saluted the apartment block. Now that the formalities were out of the way, Viktor sat down beside a woman dressed with two too many rainbow coloured items to him. But then again he was dressed like a cross between a soldier from the 1800s and an undertaker. He lit a cigarette and sighed,

"Interesting choice of clothing." he said quietly in german, "Rainbow is not a colour for the winter... correct me if I'm wrong."

Niobe didn't look up to register anyone until a man spoke shocking her out of her thoughts and making her jump a little, glancing up into his eyes she smiled widely, it was never a wrong season for colour she thought, it helped make things bright when everywhere was dull.

Taking a look closer at the man she blushed slightly and she bit her lip Niobe thought that he was really quite handsome but before she was caught staring she averted her eyes.

"It's never a wrong time for colours I think, but it seems like you are a big fan of the black however."

Niobe blinked a little and then smiled softly at the bunch of red roses sat outside Ares apartment block, she had never seen this man before but he could have known her brother, or maybe they were for another person who had died.

"I'm Niobe Maestas, who are you?"

He saw that he'd startled the attractive woman but he always seemed to have that effect on people. Apparently he was very initimating. Looking her over more, he noticed that she was very attractive actually. He had to resist the urge to lick his lips but he was still in a sobre mood so he was successful,

"Yes I think I look best in black." he replied with a small smirk, "You do look rather lovely in those colours my dear."

When he saw her looking at the roses he'd placed at the lost soldier's apartment block. He smiled but when she told him her name he flinched slightly,

"My name is Viktor Nickel. It is nice to meet you Miss Maestas." he paused, frowning a little bit, "Your brother was Ares?"

Niobe smiled happily when she was told she looked good in these colours. She had made a point of never ever wearing black or a dark colour, the closest she had come to wearing black was a light shade of grey that she wore to an interview once.

Inhaling the comforting smell of the mans cigarette Niobe smiled, it always reminded her of Ares, that smell.

"Why thank you, they'd best look okay I only ever wear bright colours. I'd be heartbroken if they looked awful."

Blinking at Viktor, she wondered why he seemed to flinch when she told him her last name, so he was here because of Ares after all, but that didn't mean things had to be awkward, far from it, she was happy that someone else had come.

"Yes, Ares is my brother, thank you...for um...bringing the flowers for him, even if it is your job to, I know he'd appreciate it...well, maybe he wouldn't but I sure do!" she said happily

Viktor admitted to himself that she did look rather good in the strange socks. They gave her an 'alternative' look that he had to admit he found rather attractive in a woman. He tapped her hat with a smirk,

"The hat is only the second part of it I'm afraid." he breathed away with some cigarette smoke, "I like your socks. Very... distinguished."

He chuckled a little bit. She was making him a lot more relaxed about his least favourite duty. Not a lot of people knew this but Viktor cared more about those under his military command than almost anyone else. Every soldier underneath him was his brother. He smiled a little bit,

"I doubt he would appreciate the flowers actually." he chuckled, "Knowing Ares he would be happier if we spent the money on something for the men to remember him by. He was... he was a real soldier. A good soldier and a good man. A man someone could call brother proudly."

Niobe grinned happily as he tapped her hat, it was rather odd for a man like he looked like he was a little bit stern and she wondered why he was being too happy with her, not like she minded though, it was really quite sweet.

And it had nothing to do with the fact a handsome man was fawning over her.

"Thank you, you smoke in a very nice way, I like the smell of smoke you know, it always reminds me of Ares, he used to smoke, but I suppose you know that."

Without a doubt Niobe knew what Ares would have done with the money, and it wasn't what Viktor thought it would be but she didn't want to make him feel bad by correcting him, but she knew that Ares, if he knew it was his last gift, would give it to Papa.

"I'm sure he was very kind to his friends, but, he often sent money to Mama and Papa so, I assume he'd rather it go to them, of course, he tried giving money to me too but I always gave it right back!"

Tilting her head Niobe asked quietly: "Is this your job? Or do you do something else too?"

Viktor wasn't as angry or as hateful as he normally was right now. It was as if he was more emotionally with the assumed death of one of his soldiers. Like an open wound, he supposed. He continued to smoke, happy that he wasn't going to be chasing this smoking hot woman away with his cigarette smoke,

"Well then I think I'll just keep on smoking." he pulled a packet of cigarettes from his pocket and offered her one, "Help yourself."

Viktor raised an eyebrow. When he had been around the men, Ares had only seemed to care about his friends. He supposed it might have been because it wasn't 'cool' in 'hard' men to talk about how much you loved you mom and dad,

"Ah... so he was one of those then." he observed with a small chuckle, "A little do-gooder... the world is poorer for his loss."

Viktor shrugged and pointed at the shape of Durmstrang in the distance,

"I work as the Intructor of World History at Durmstrang Institute." he smiled, "But I am also a soldier."

When Viktor offered her a cigarette Niobe held her hands up shaking her head a little, she hadn't meant that she had smoked herself when she said that she liked the smell, but she could see how it could have been confusing.

"Sorry, I don't smoke myself, I don't think my chest could take it."

Smiling happily Niobe nodded her head, her brother was the best person she had ever met, she had helped raise him in his teenage years and had been pretty much like a mother to him, although they never spoke of it, she knew he loved her.

"Ares was a brave man, I shall miss him very much, I am so lonely now he is gone, we only saw each other every so often, but I was happy knowing he was here if I needed him or vice versa."

Niobe bite her lip and blinked rapidly to clear the tears from her eyes, it just wouldn't do to be sad, not around other people, her tears were for home.

"Really? That's wonderful! I went there myself you know but I don't think I ever took World History, apologies for that. I'm a waitress myself, in three cafes...it's so tiring!"

Viktor chuckled a little bit as he vanished the packet of cigarette's wandlessly. Seemed he had stumbled across something very rare... someone who enjoyed the smell of cigarette smoke without being a smoker themselves. He glanced down at the mention of her chest,

"Well it looks quite strong to me." he flirted blantantly before smirking a little, "I guess I could do the smoking for both of us for awhile."

He nodded as she spoke. The boy he remembered had been very brave as well but there were just somethings that bravery couldn't save you from. He sighed a little bit,

"He was someone you could count on." he agreed before reaching up and wiping away a tear, "Now now... none of that. I didn't know Ares like you did but I know he wouldn't want you to cry."

He chuckled a little bit,

"Well I only started this year. I'm not that old you know." he joked before raising an eyebrow, "Wow... that does sound tiring. May I ask why you work in three?"

Niobe blushed wildly as Viktor looked at her chest, and inevitably her breasts when he did so, it made her flush pink and duck her head to one side as she tried to get rid of her blush, moving her head free from being nestled in her green scarf.

"Well thank you Viktor, but I think that would be best, appearances are often deceptive you know."

Wagging her finger knowingly Niobe blushed even more despite her tears as Viktor touched her and wiped away her tear, she felt so awful for crying in front of people, it was just not like her and she scolded herself mentally.

"Forgive me...I don't mean to, I very rarely cry I guess things have just gotten on top of me recently, I do apologise." fixing a smile on her face Niobe smoothed out her skirt.

With a slight widening of the eyes she blinked at Viktor, he obviously had never lived on the poverty line before like she was, there were other reasons for her wearing massive boots and striped socks beside her alternative fashion sense.

"Well...I don't have enough money to live if I don't work three, two of them cover rent and bills, because the guys there don't give me my tips and the third one goes on food and my emergency fund." Niobe said proudly.

Viktor saw her blushing as she had to turn away to avoid blushing even more. He flashed a quick, feral, grin before he schooled his features back to his easy smirk. She did have quite the chest, if he was being frank. He chuckled lightly,

"Yes they can be..." he paused before winking at her, "I doubt they are here though."

He wiped away her tears lightly and couldn't help but cup her cheek gently as he wiped other tears away with his thumb. Viktor pulled his hand away rather reluctantly, she had very smooth skin,

"There's nothing to forgive." he replied with a small smile, "But I trust that you don't cry too often. Tears spoil a lovely face such as yours."

Viktor blinked a few times as she explained her need for three jobs. Viktor and his brother had always been pretty well set up even after their family left them on their own, a right of passage. Viktor smiled at her faintly,

"I admire your spirit." he told her quietly, "There are others who would have collapsed under such strain. It speaks to your character that you have remained strong."

Niobe although getting his meaning didn't think that Viktor was getting her meaning either, it was something that you probably couldn't tell if she didn't point it out, but that was Because she was also so careful about what she did.

"I simply meant that I have asthma, so, I don't think I would be able to smoke that well without getting sick."

While Viktor wiped her tears away Niobe leant her head into his hand, she had been so lonely recently and Viktor was the first person she had really spoken to in weeks, but she was glad that he was here now otherwise she didn't know what she would do.

"Thank you for being here Viktor, you can leave though if you want to, I understand, you have things to do I bet, but my face isn't beautiful, or lovely."

A soft smile graced her lips and Niobe laughed, it was the first time that someone besides her family had said that to her.

"If you say so, I don't have much choice really do I? I either do the work, or I don't and I starve, the world goes round. I never used to be like this though...I used to have a wardrobe full of clothes and a house, not a flat, oh and it had a wonderful garden...forgive me, I'm rambling."

Viktor laughed a little bit as he shook his head, being careful to laugh in such a way that it was clear that he was laughing with her and not at her. Seened that he'd gone off on a bit off a tangent then. He smiled a little bit,

"Ah asthma..." he shook his head, "Sorry about that. Didn't know that you had asthma. Please forgive any offence I caused."

He smiled a little bit when she leant into his hand. Of course he was smiling for two reasons. The first was the predator side of him saw it as the first signs that she would let him take her in time. It was an urge he pushed aside for now. The second was the nice side of him, which was happy he was helping her,

"Your face is very beautiful, as is the rest of you Niobe." he told her firmly but softly, "Ah some marking of tests and tedious detentions. Nothing that compares to helping a lovely woman in need."

Viktor chuckled a little and shook his head slightly,

"You have your magic don't you? If you have that you have hope." he told her quietly before smiling wider, "Tell me about this house you had..."

Niobe giggled softly and shrugged her shoulders, she wasn't offended in the slightest by the fact that Viktor didn't know she had asthma after all she had worse things said to her while she was working, it was almost as if people just thought of her as a piece of ass while she worked.

"Don't you worry about it! You weren't to know!" she said kindly

With a sort of sad smile Niobe nodded her head, she didn't want to get into an argument about whether she was pretty or not, she was nothing like she used to look like, to her she looked tired all the time and her hands that were soft were rough and cold.

"If...if you're sure Viktor, I wouldn't want to get you in trouble over something so silly as me."

The memories of her house were mostly good. Niobe had loved it. Large Greek pillars and White stone made it look like their house at home, but inside it was typically English Victorian as there was a need to be warmer rather than cooler like in Greece.

"Well, we built our own house when we came over to Germany 13 years ago, it's mock Greek so that me and Ares didn't feel too odd at first to be away from home, it was in Berlin, quite a nice quiet little place mainly a pure blood community..."

Niobe felt a well of sadness well up inside her but she quashed it down with a very small smile, the lump persistently staying.

"Ah, but that was a long time ago."

Viktor frowned a little bit and looked at the smoke wafting around the two of them from his cigarette. He didn't know much about asthma but he knew that smoking was not an option for people with the condition. He also knew that second hand smoke was almost as bad. He stubbed his cigarette out against the bench,

"Ah so the cigarette smoke isn't good for your lungs." he smiled a little bit, "A good thing too much is a bad thing... or something like that."

Viktor looked at her for a few seconds longer. She looked so very tired and he was sure that she probably doubted her looks a little bit. He placed a hand on her shoulder,

"A beautiful woman is someone made to cause trouble." he joked lightly before shaking his head, "But that is superficial beauty I suppose."

Viktor raised an eyebrow slightly. He vaguely recalled seeing a building as she had discribed but the last time he'd been in Berlin he'd been chasing British spies so he didn't have time to look at the houses,

"It sounds like a beautiful home." he paused before chuckling, "It is good that you had a home though. My brother and I... we had a house. A large one. But it wasn't a home."

He saw that she was struggling so stroked her cheek gently, smiling as he did so,

"That may be... but memories are forever."

Niobe looked at Viktor as he makes a move with his cigarette and he stubbed it out on the bench, biting her lip, she tried to stop pouting because she loved the smell of smoke and she was a little sad that she didn't get more of the smell.

However, she already began to feel a little weasey and Niobe coughed a little.

"Awwwwww but Viktor, I haven't smelt it in a while, you're just like Papa used to be! What harm will it do?"

Smiling at his hand on her shoulder Niobe was very tempted to rest her head on his hand for a moment but didn't, she needed to get out a bit more, spend some time with different people get new friends.

"You saying I'm not superficially beautiful?" she asks, folding her arms and looking hurt "Wait...that's a bad thing isn't it? Never mind!"

Niobe bit her lip and she nodded her head, it was something that always pained her to think about, she loved her home and missed it very much, and it was true, memories are forever, the bad ones included.

"That's very true, memories are forever."

Viktor saw that she was pouting cutely and almost didn't stub out his cigarette but did in the end. The little cough made him feel more secure in his choice,

"Well your Papa was right." he replied with a small smirk, "Too much will give you lung cancer. Of course, with your condition it can bring on a massive attack. Not happening on my watch."

He chuckled a little bit and stroked a strand of her hair as he took his hand away,

"I'm saying your beauty appears to go beyond skin deep." he smirked a little bit, "Not a lot of beautiful women can say that about their personality and appearance."

He saw her sad expression and did something that he had wanted to do since he'd first met her. Taking a deep breath, he wrapped his arms around her and gave her a brief hug before pulling away,

"You must be strong Niobe..." he told her quietly, "You cannot live in memories. Only hurt can come of that."

Niobe knew that of course he was right and that it was only aggravating her condition but she couldn't help but want more of that familiar smell that had been denied to her recently, and it was with a pang of regret that she felt it go.

"I shouldn't have told you that if you're going to be mean about it."

Pouting still Niobe leant slightly into Viktors touch as he moved a strand of hair away before blushing and glancing at her fob watch, almost time to head off back to work.

"How do you know? I could be a right horrible cow if you get to know me."

When she heard the deep breath from Viktor Niobe wondered if it was something to do with her, maybe she had done something wrong, but when he hugged her she blinked and blushed again, swiftly getting up from the bench.

"But all I have are memories, I'd rather have something painful, than nothing at all."

Swinging her bag over her shoulder she smiled sadly, clasping her hands and looking from Viktor to her brothers apartment.

He knew that she wanted to smell more of the cigarette smoke so he took out a single cigarette and handed it to her,

"Here." he smiled happily as he handed it to her, "You can burn it for incence."

Viktor noticed that she leant her head into his hand and blushed. He raised any an eyebrow before winking at her,

"Ah you aren't." He tapped the side of his head knowingly, "I just know these things."

He could tell that she was a little bit distressed when he took a deep breath but he just hugged her tightly. Despite the hug she stood up and he sighed a little bit,

"Well... that's one way about it." he whispered in agreement, standing up to stand beside her. He gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze, "But try not to let it define you."

Niobe took the cigarette and smiled happily, slipping it into her coat pocket she took another look at her brothers charred and blackened apartment, she hoped that it would get fixed soon, she hated seeing it like this.

"Thank you, I shall use it wisely, don't worry I'll carry my inhaler when I use it."

Giggling slightly when Viktor winked at her and said that he knew she wasn't horrible, she smiled softly, glad that she was not seen as a weirdo or as horrible to hopefully her new friend.

"I would love to be like you, just to know things." she winked back awkwardly since she couldn't do it properly

Niobe grinned and shook her head avidly: "I'd never let something so silly get me down! You just watch me! Believe it!"

Niobe bit her lip, she didn't want to go, she didn't want to leave Viktor, she didn't know when she would be seeing him again, or if she would be seeing him again, and that was a horrible thought, but she would be fired if she was late.

"I have to go to work now, I'm sorry Viktor, but I do hope we can meet again soon!" she said hopefully, wanting him to feel the same.

He grinned as she took the cigarette. Viktor was glad that he could give her some form of comfort at the moment even if a large part of him wanted to just "take her mind off it". He viciously stomped on that instinct. For now,

"Well be sure you do." he replied with a smirk, "A woman of your beauty should not be felled by second hand smoke."

Her giggle was a musical sound and Viktor decided that he wanted to hear her giggle a lot more than she already was doing. It was addictive,

"Well it's quite easy, you just have to be around my brother for about... 23 years." he replied, sticking his tongue out at her, "Nothing too it really."

Viktor looked at her for a few seconds immediately after her outburst before blinking,

"Okay...." he replied, finding it slightly strange before holding his hand up in the air, "I shall not let such things sadden you either... believe it! Did I... did I do it right?"

Viktor grinned, a little bit of his feral grin, as he put his hands in his pockets and nodded a little bit,

"Alright then... I can see you've got to shoot off." he paused before giving her another hug, "I'll catch up to you at some point yeah?"

Niobe blushed slightly and rubbed the back of her beanie hat as she tried to get rid of her embarrassment, after all it was something that just wasn't done, having an outburst such as that in front of a man, someone you liked as well!

Cheeks now pink with the blush Niobe hugged Viktor back, holding onto him longer than she really supposed was needed and pulled away reluctantly.

"Yes please, I would like that, if you want you can try and find me at one of the places where I work, I'll always be at one of them, guaranteed."

Smiling slightly, she pecked Viktor on the cheek before walking up to the roses he had left and placing a small, handmade, little heart that she had sewn for Ares on his memorial and blew a kiss to the stone before hurrying away, giving a small wave to Viktor.

Well, that was an unusual meeting. Niobe thought, but she wanted to see him again, and soon.

He thought it was cute how she was blushing at the outburst, even if it was, admittedly, a rather strange thing to just kind of shout out. But when she hugged him back he smiled happily, having someone hug you was one of the best feelings in the world. His smile dimmed somewhat when she pulled away from him but he just carried on smiling,

"Alright then... I have permission to find you at work." he winked at her, "I'll hold you to that."

Viktor touched a hand to where she'd kissed his cheek before smiling faintly when she went to leave a token at her brother's memorial. He waved when she went in the opposite direction to him and put his hands back into his pockets as it began to rain.

It was a meeting he was sure to be glad of in the future.
