DADA second years - fourth lesson

Lucia sat by her desk, waiting for the class to walk into the room. She pointed her wand to the blackboard, and the word 'Patronus' appeared. She then turned as the first students filed in.

"All right class! As you can see, we'll be learning about the Patronus Charm today. First of all, who can tell me what the spell does?" she asked, looking at them all.

When one of the students raised their hand, she pointed to them and they answered.

Then she turned fully to the class again. "And what kind of creature would this spell be effective against?" she asked them.

(OOC: Yeah, new things all around, but reply only to either the one with the patronus or the one where Lucia asks what creature it is. Hope that's understandable. Also, it's important that the person replying first to this thread replies to the first question if it has yet to be answered.)

Anne walked into class ans sat in the back. She sighed and smiled when she saw the spell. She had already been able to to this one. She smiled and put up her hand.

"It produces a Patrounus, it acts as a guardian against certain creatures." She said smiling.

Xander walked into class, surprised that he was one of the first to arrive. Taking a seat, he listened to the first question and Anne's following answer.

He'd learned all about this spell from his parents and their talk of the second wizarding war, what with all the dementors. Raising his answer, he replied, "It is used against dark creatures. Specifically Dementors and Lethifolds."

Lucia smiled at Anne. "Precisely. Five points to Gryffindor. And to go into detail, a patronus is a silver fog that produces light against dark creatures. It takes shape of the animal, be it magical or not, you love the most," she explained.

"You are quite right, Mr. Clarke. Five points to Slytherin. It is mostly used against Dementors, but can also be used on lethifolds. I'm surprised you knew this, Mr. Clarke, because it is rather unknown to many wizards much older than you. Well done," she said proudly.

Lucia then pushed away from the desk she was leaning against and took out her wand. "The incantation is 'Expecto Patronum'. The handmovement is a bit unusual. Hold your wand up into the air, make a counter-clockwise circle and then flick it down until it is pointed at your target. Of course we won't be trying this out on a real dementor. Not now anyways. But maybe that will be the first thing we'll do on our first lesson of your third year.

"Now, just find a really happy memory. You need a happy memory when using this spell, because it is based on the good of the world, and good alone. If darkness holds your thoughts, the patronus will not appear. So, figure out what the happiest moment of your life was, and let it fill your mind. Then your patronus will take shape. Like so," she said and lifted her wand.

"Expecto patronum," she said, and a massive, silver griffin burst from the tip of her wand. "Ten points to each if you manage even a silver wasp," she said with a smile, "Now try."

Xander nodded to Anne, a sign of Good luck, and walked over to a clear area of the room.

He closed his eyes to try an concentrate on a memory. He had been rather good at Occlumency the past year, and used it to let all of his bad memories fade away.

Tess. She was the shinning light in his mind. Focusing on one memory in particular, the rose garden at her house the last summer, he calmly opened his eyes and tried the spell. "Expecto Patronum."

It felt as if his happy memory was feeding the spell, moving through the wand. As he remembered details, the way her hair smelled, the twinkle of mischief in her eyes, it felt stronger. Starting off as a simple orb, it soon grew into a pale grey fox. It looked as if it was the ghost of a black fox. Hmm. He wondered where that had come from.

Lucia beamed. "Well done, Mr. Clarke, a fox, apparently?" she said happily. "Well, ten points to Slytherin then," she added, feeling very proud at her students. All of them showed so much potential.

"Well, time has run away. Class dismissed," she said, still smiling, and then walked to her office.
